Book Review - Telecommunications and Data Communications HandbookTelecommunications and
Data Communications Handbook

Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook, by Ray Horak, is a thoroughly researched and comprehensive survey of telecom and datacom technologies and services, from the most basic to the most complex. The book begins with basic concepts and definitions and marches through the full ranges of transmission media and voice, data, and video systems, networks, standards and protocols. Horak sets the technologies in context, providing an excellent level of detail on the origin and evolution of fiber optics, cellular radio, digital carrier systems, TCP/IP, and the Internet, as examples. While written for a reasonably astute academic and professional readership, Horak develops each topic in plain English and in such a commonsense and patient manner that the book is equally informative and useful to a student or relative newcomer to telecommunications. We think that anyone with a compelling need for a complete and accurate understanding of telecommunications can benefit from it.

HP

Exadata appliance unveiled
Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison caught the Oracle OpenWorld conference audience by surprise by rolling out the Exadata line of two hardware-software configurations. The integrated servers re-architect the relationship between Oracle's 11g database and high-performance storage. Exadata, in essence, gives new meaning to "attached" storage for Oracle databases. It mimics the close pairing of data and logic execution that such cloud providers as Google use with MapReduce technologies. Ellison referred to the storage servers as "programmable."  Exadata also re-architects the HP-Oracle relationship, making HP an Oracle storage partner extraordinaire -- thereby upsetting the status quo of the worlds of IT storage, databases and data warehouses markets. Furthermore, Exadata leverages parallelism and high-performance industry standard hardware to bring "extreme business intelligence" to more enterprises, all in a neat standalone package that's forklift-ready. Beyond 10 terabytes and into the petabyte range was how HP and Oracle designers describe the scale and 10x to 72x typical performance gains from the high-end Exadata "Machine."

IBM

Attention all AS/400 (iSeries) users: Liberation is at hand
Impart Solutions announced a new line of Liberation Services designed for easy and pain-free replacement of your in-house JD Edwards, JBA and BPCS order entry and inventory management software and hardware. Many businesses find themselves captured by the comfortableness of their in-house software, unable to break a reliance on long-standing applications that come at a significant cost: aging hardware; static functionality barely keeping pace with changing needs; expensive licensing fees that are now fixtures in annual budgets; and continuing investment in technology hardware that is now outdated. Impart Solutions Liberation Services, based on a SaaS solution, provides a pathway out of this trap. Our SaaS model allows for the responsible transfer of data processing and data security operations to highly trained data processing professionals and the many resources at their disposal through a simple internet connection. The same software functionality is now available to your key employees through the internet on a subscription basis and no requirement for a large down stroke or unwieldy conversion cost. The software underlying our services is LAMP Enterprise, a fully functional and integrated ERP solution that includes financials, order entry, billing, inventory management and manufacturing modules. Impart Solutions will provide operational support including help desk support, security, backup and recovery, maintenance and server support.

Avistar, IBM to provide bandwidth management for unified communications

Avistar Communications Corporation announced that it will be working with IBM to provide bandwidth management for unified communications and collaboration solutions. As part of this work, Avistar’s C3’s dynamic bandwidth management technology is being licensed by IBM. The goal of this relationship is to help customers take full advantage of their unified communications capabilities – including videoconferencing -- without experiencing degradation of service or investing in network upgrades or additional overhead. Videoconferencing is a dynamic area of the unified communications (UC) market, which is estimated by Wainhouse Research to reach $30-40 billion by 2011. The cornerstone of IBM’s unified communications strategy is IBM Lotus Sametime, an award-winning and market-leading platform that offers integrated, enterprise unified communications tools such as IM, VoIP, video chats and web conferencing.

Power

The Eaton 5130 UPS solves costly power problems for IT and telecommunication systems
Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announced the introduction of its Eaton 5130 uninterruptible power system (UPS). Part of the Powerware series, the 1250 to 3000 VA line-interactive models are specifically suited for protecting servers, routers, switches, workstations, as well as VoIP and EDGE/3G/WiMAX wireless networking equipment against costly power fluctuations and outages. Designed to deliver clean, continuous power no matter the state of the incoming utility power, the 5130 is one of the most flexible UPSs on the market today offering one of the best price per performance ratio. Available in slim 2U (3.50 inches) and 3U (5.25 inches) rack and tower configurations, the 5130’s compact size is ideal for dense rack enclosures. In addition, user-replaceable hot swappable batteries allow users to safely install new batteries without powering down the connected equipment or removing the UPS from the network rack. For applications requiring longer run times, slim 2U external battery modules can be quickly added to provide hours of backup time – especially important for telecommunications, VoIP and healthcare systems.

RFID

Ruggedised and apparel RFID become popular
The IDTechEx Knowledgebase of over 3,500 RFID projects in 109 countries illustrates how this market of over $5 billion is rapidly diversifying. For example, ruggedised RFID tags have long been sold in volume for opening your car door at a distance and for industrial laundry. However, in the last six months, most of the sellers of disposable UHF labels used in the retail supply chain and on air baggage report a rapid increase in requests for ruggedised versions. That usually involves the capability of working on metal in addition to the ability to withstand mechanical, chemical, thermal and electromagnetic abuse. Such tags are therefore often referred to as on-metal tags and most of them rely on thick plastic, with some employing clever electromagnetic materials as well.

Compare the use of disposable tags for retail apparel with tags fitted for life in laundry. In both cases it is done simply for stock control. The next phase is to combine the best features of both in order to provide many other paybacks and consumer benefits. Tagging of rented apparel and linen is carried out by over one hundred commercial and dedicated laundries in military establishments, hospitals, casinos and so on. It is well established. Over 150 million items are laundered by industrial laundries across the world and some items, such as uniforms, are replaced and re-tagged within one year. New versions of laundry tags take the form of small buttons and colour matched discs.

In addition, we now have a clearly demonstrated business case for disposable tags on apparel in the retail supply chain. Over 200 million of these disposable apparel tags are being fitted this year and one hundred times that number is in prospect in ten years time. About 60 retailers and their suppliers are now copying this and wondering why they did not do so earlier, such are the benefits in profit and customer service.

Security

LogRhythm and PowerTech partner to deliver real-time log and security event management
LogRhythm and The PowerTech Group, Inc. announced a strategic partnership to provide comprehensive log and security event management for customers running the IBM AS/400 (also known as IBM i, iSeries, and System i). The integration of LogRhythm and PowerTech Interact enables organizations to centrally collect, analyze, correlate and manage real-time security events from their IBM AS/400 and System i platforms with log data from other sources in their network. PowerTech Interact gathers security events from the audit journal, operating system, and network and forwards them in real time via syslog to the LogRhythm system for analysis, correlation, alerting, reporting and archiving. Unlike alternative approaches that use batch ftp flat file transfers, the LogRhythm-PowerTech solution provides real-time visibility into security events.

SMB

U4EA Technologies announces wireless LAN solution for small-to-medium business market
U4EA Technologies announced the Fusion 300 Wireless LAN Controller and Fusion 50 Access Points (AP), a centrally managed Wi-Fi solution designed specifically for the small-to-medium business (SMB) segment. The Fusion 300 is optimized for environments with limited in-house IT or wireless expertise, enabling SMBs to have a secure wireless network with enterprise-class functionality up-and-running in less than 15 minutes. According to the State Department, companies with fewer than 500 employees represent 99% of all U.S. businesses; advances in technology, particularly unified communications, are driving demand for Wi-Fi in this market. The Dell'Oro Group predicts the penetration rate of wireless LAN will double by 2012, approaching $4 billion. Yet there are virtually no solutions specifically tailored for the business and IT needs of the small-to-medium sized business. The Fusion 300 and 50 are now available through U4EA's partner distribution network, which includes service providers, distributors, VARs and resellers serving the SMB and SME market.
