Avaya announces agreements to purchase Nortel's Enterprise Solutions Business

Avaya has announced that it has signed agreements to purchase Nortel's enterprise solutions business for US$475 million. Avaya believes the agreements are a significant step in strengthening its leadership in business communications and positioning the company to effectively deliver industry leading enterprise communications solutions to customers around the globe.

“The addition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions will increase Avaya's global scale, expand our channel partner network, and strengthen our world-class portfolio of products and services,” said Kevin Kennedy, president and CEO, Avaya. “This is a strategic opportunity to acquire talent and complementary assets that position the combined company for growth and success. We are committed to protecting the communications investments of the customers of Avaya and Nortel, and to effectively executing the integration of Nortel Enterprise Solutions and Avaya.”

“As the largest reseller of Avaya and Nortel equipment to Canadian business, Bell believes Avaya's history of leadership in enterprise communications makes it an ideal candidate for this proposed transaction,” said Stéphane Boisvert, President of Bell Business Markets. "Bell was the first major service provider to standardize on both Avaya and Nortel IP telephony solutions, and we are confident Avaya will continue to provide partners and customers with innovative business communications technologies and responsive customer support going forward.”

The proposed acquisition includes the Nortel Enterprise Solutions voice, data and government systems businesses.

"Avaya's proposed acquisition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions is good news for our customers, who would benefit from the broadened range of compelling solutions,” said Hanif Lalani, CEO, BT Global Services. “BT and Avaya have been working closely, and successfully, over the last couple of years. Building on our success, BT has plans to expand this engagement with Avaya over the next year to offer a full unified communications portfolio. Today's news strengthens this expansion plan.”

The transaction is subject to a competitive bidding process and requires the approval of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Avaya expects that hearings before those courts to approve bidding procedures will be held within the next couple of weeks, followed by an auction, with hearings for approval of the ultimate sale to be held thereafter.

In EMEA, Avaya has entered into an agreement with the Joint Administrators, on behalf of the EMEA entities for which they have been appointed and the transaction is subject to information and consultation with employee representatives and approval of the courts in France and Israel. The transaction is also subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of necessary regulatory approvals.

pbxnsip selects Top System as software distributor for Central Europe
To respond to growing interest overseas, VoIP, SIP and Microsoft product training, SIP-based IP PBX software player pbxnsip announced it has selected Top System as its software distributor for the Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Morocco telephony markets. Under the partnership, pbxnsip and Top System, a software house specialized in developing and distributing software applications, have implemented an integrated IP PBX modular system with Top System Avonca product, in the region. The new IP PBX product is part of a new distribution agreement with pbxnsip. The move comes in response to a growing demand for lawyers, solicitors and barristers to have a solid solution to help satisfy their internal network infrastructure and telephony requirements, pbxnsip said. For the last two years, Brussels-based Top System reported poor experience with other IP PBX products. So, the company approached the Avonca IP PBX issue with a new vertical application, pbxnsip.

UK PBX and IP-PBX market drops in volumes for Q1 2009

The financial meltdown which is particularly more severe in the western world is pinching enterprise communication vendors as the UK market for PBX and IP-PBX products witnessed a drastic fall in volumes. For the PBX market with less than 100 extensions, the drop was 40% while for more than 100 extensions the drop was 34% on a year-over-year comparison. The total market declined by 38% managing to record volumes of 496 thousand extensions. In the below 100 extensions market, the most drastic fall was witnessed in the 11-30 extensions space with a 44% drop. The findings, which are part of a research by MZA, say that the UK market is heading for its worst performance in the PBX and IP-PBX market since 1998.

Companywise, Cisco emerged as the market leader with a 17% market share closely followed by Avaya. Mitel Networks assumed the number 3 position with 15% market share. Additionally the UK market is gradually adopting IP-PBX with over 48% of total extensions deployed being IP as compared to 42% in Q1 2008. IP penetration is more dominant in the above 100 extensions market with IP extensions accounting for 70% of pie as compared to 30% witnessed in case of market for below 100 extensions. Cisco and Mitel Networks rule this space in the UK.

Eastern Management Group study finds Open Source PBX market growth fueled by repeat sales
A new study by The Eastern Management Group, a veteran telecommunications industry market research firm, has found that repeat customers represent the majority of Open Source PBX sales, with undeniably negative consequences for manufacturers of conventional phone systems. The Eastern Management Group report, “Open Source PBX: Market Size, Forecast and Analysis,” states that 55 percent of new Open Source PBX sales are made to returning customers and they acquire larger systems the second time around as Open Source PBXs burrow into companies. The Eastern Management Group’s ongoing examination of 7,000 businesses finds that while first time Open Source PBX customers may test-out open source with a small telephone system installation, returning customers move beyond experimentation and turn-up larger PBXs. According to the report, first time Open Source PBX customers install 63 percent of all systems with under 10 phones, while returning customers put in 92 percent of all systems with 500 to 1,000 phones. Overall, companies with two or more Open Source PBXs install systems averaging 62 telephones, twice that of all businesses.

Shipments of 802.11n will surge ahead of 802.11g in the Wi-Fi Chipset market
With growth rates well over 100% in 2010, shipments of Wi-Fi Chipsets based on the draft n/802.11n will surge ahead of those based on 802.11g, reports In-Stat. 802.11n is ahead in nearly every equipment category, but unit volume is being driven by shipment growth in mobile handsets and notebook PCs. “802.11n chipset revenue will surpass that of 802.11g this year as a result of higher Average Selling Prices (ASPs),” says Victoria Fodale, In-Stat analyst. “ASPs for draft n/802.11n chipsets are complex, as there are more options that can impact prices. These options include support for the 5GHz spectrum and the number of data streams, which can range from 1 to 4.” In-Stat research finds that total Wi-Fi chipset revenue will pass $4 billion by 2012.
