ASCDI-NATD Boston Conference
The ASCDI-NATD Boston Conference, held on September 14, 2011 at the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel, was a huge success with 120 delegates attending.  The meeting began at 2:00 PM with a welcome address from Neil Vill, ASCDI Chairman and Jim Goebel, NATD President.  Neil gave an update on the ASCDI-NATD Anti Counterfeit Policy; this was followed by guest speaker Tony Callerone from AAA Components Test Lab, who spoke about Counterfeit Product Identification.  The meeting ended with a session on Avaya, Oracle, Cisco, and the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice presented by Robert Boyle, ASCDI-NATD Legal Counsel.  At 7:00 PM, attendees made their way over to Legal Sea Foods Park Square for a fabulous cocktail reception sponsored by Mosaic Technology and a scrumptious lobster dinner sponsored by Pyramid Technologies.  A great time was had by all!

Aastra SIP-DECT phones first to be certified with NET SmartSIP
Among Aastra Technologies Limited’s more recent innovations is the integration of SmartSIP 2.0 for Microsoft Lync Server 2010 from Network Equipment Technologies (NET) with Aastra’s award winning SIP-DECT mobility solution and broad portfolio of standards based SIP phones. The Aastra SIP-DECT phones are the first to be fully certified with NET SmartSIP. NET’s SmartSIP 2.0 is a software app that provides Lync voice interoperability for SIP devices. In a Lync environment, SmartSIP 2.0 includes presence functionality, extends the enterprise’s existing SIP endpoints and enables 802.11 WiFi and DECT wireless Devices. As a result of this level of integration, Aastra’s SIP-DECT handsets operate just as any other SIP endpoint on the Lync IP network, but provide the added dimension of mobility that is so critical in industries such as healthcare, retail, hospitality and distribution/logistics. Aastra’s SIP-DECT solution is based on mature technology and open standards, so it is equally effective on not only Aastra and Lync platforms, but also on all third-party systems or Centrex platforms of Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs).

Call Trunk acquires Active Objects
Call Trunk recently announced the acquisition of CISCO-call management software business Active Objects. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, is another stepping stone for Call Trunk, which has this year launched a cloud-based call recording service in the US, UK and Australia. While Call Trunk already provides solutions at the consumer and Small/ Medium-sized Enterprise level, this acquisition provides further resource and expertise to integrate its call recording service with the CISCO-compliant Unified Communications providers. In addition to launching in three continents in the first half of 2011, Call Trunk also introduced apps that integrate call recording into the iPhone, blackberry, android and Mac OS. Unlike other providers of phone call recording services, Call Trunk requires no software, no hardware and no access gateways.  Users can record the calls from whatever phone they choose to use. Recorded phones calls are securely stored in a “trunk” in the cloud. Users can access these anytime, anywhere rather than be tied to their local phone. The online trunk can be integrated with other services such as auto-transcription services or CRM systems.

TwilioCon sold out: inaugural conference for developers and entrepreneurs building the future of cloud communications
Twilio sold out their inaugural TwilioCon event, a new two-day conference created by the company. TwilioCon brought together the creators of Twilio-powered businesses, technology experts and business leaders for two days of intense learning and fun, including a hackathon, one-on-one access to Twilio product teams, fabulous food and drink from local San Francisco vendors, and of course the requisite conference after-party. Prominent industry dealmaker, Ron Conway, was a featured speaker, as well as angel investor Dave McClure. Other speakers and moderators on the agenda were former Pixar CTO Oren Jacob, reporters Jolie O’Dell of VentureBeat, Alastair Goldfisher of Thomson Reuters and Matt Rosoff of Business Insider, as well as up-and-coming developers such as Kevin Whinnery from Appcelerator and Ian Hunter from Zaarly. Licensing Executives Society (U.S.A. and Canada) to release new data on high tech industry deal terms and royalty rates
Recent bombshell deals like the Nortel auction and Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility have shined a white-hot spotlight on the power of intellectual property (IP) transactions. But specifics on high technology deals have not been available — until now. The Licensing Executives Society (U.S.A. & Canada), Inc. will release preliminary results from its inaugural High Technology Sector Royalty Rates and Deal Terms Survey during a special mini-plenary session at its Annual Meeting, October 16-18 in San Diego. For years, in this industry that relies on successful collaborations, alliances and deal-making, there have been major gaps in deal data to help inform, teach and guide professionals in future negotiations. LES (USA & Canada) has addressed this gap with a broad-reaching ‘Royalty Rate and Deal Terms Survey’ initiative that is gathering deal term data by industry sector. To date the society has completed similar surveys looking at deal term and royalty rate data in the life sciences/health care sector and the chemicals/energy/environmental and materials sector.

VMware and Mitel collaborate, achieve multiple technology breakthrough
VMware and Mitel unveiled a significant technical advancement designed to considerably increase the rapidly growing deployment of desktop virtualization for IT departments around the world. snom technology AG announced snom UC – a new edition of snom IP desktop phones designed for unified communications (UC) and qualified for use with Microsoft Lync Server 2010. The new line includes the snom 821 UC edition and the snom 300 UC edition, both of which work with Lync Server 2010 and are currently the only phones on the market compatible with both Microsoft Lync and other SIP based PBXs.
