HP details plans to
consolidate global data centers HP announced plans to consolidate its 85 data centers
worldwide into six larger centers located in three U.S. cities. The
consolidation will result in the deployment of HP's IT infrastructure in two
facilities each in Atlanta, Houston and Austin, Texas. In addition to
enabling HP's IT organization to be more nimble and provide better
information for the entire company, the consolidation will help HP reduce its
IT spending by approximately $1 billion in the coming years. The facilities
also will serve as a showcase for HP's adaptive infrastructure products and
services. HP has designed the six facilities to be "lights out"
data centers, capable of being managed remotely. This will be enabled through
the use of the company's adaptive infrastructure solutions, including HP
Integrity servers, HP BladeSystem servers, HP OpenView management software
and HP StorageWorks networked storage. Visit www.hp.com. IBM

iSeries awards
Optimus Solutions wins
800-lb. Gorilla Award Optimus Solutions, a comprehensive IT products and
solutions provider, announces it has won the 800-lb. Gorilla Award from
SilverBack Technolo-gies. The award honors Optimus for achieving $10 million
or more in annual revenues by providing excellent remote managed services to
its wide customer base in the financial services, manufac-turing, education
and government market sectors. Managed Services allow remote administration
and management of IT infrastructure that can result in significant savings by
consolidating system administration functions and reducing overhead.
"The 800-lb. Gorilla Award is our way of recogniz-ing these outstanding
companies that have expanded their services business and, in some cases,
completely transformed their business models to embrace the lucrative field
of remote managed services," stated Dan Phillips, CEO, SilverBack
Technologies, Inc. "This is only the tip of the iceberg. Some of our
partners are doing in excess of $20 million yearly in managed services. All
of our partners are expected to grow 20 to 30 percent this year." Visit www.OptimusSolutions.com

Ethernet Switch market
retreats in first quarter A recently published report from Dell'Oro Group, the
trusted source for market information about the networking and
telecommunications industries, reveals that in the first quarter of 2006, the
Ethernet Switch market declined sequentially following three consecutive
quarters of growth. The report indicates that the Fast Ethernet segment,
which was instrumental in driving growth in the fourth quarter of 2005,
experienced the most severe decline. "Although the market did decline
sequentially, on a year-over-year basis it experienced a double digit
increase," said Seamus Crehan, Director of Ethernet Switch Research at
Dell'Oro Group. "We still believe that the Ethernet Switch market
remains robust and attribute the first quarter decline more to seasonal softness
than to overall market weakness," added Crehan. Visit www.DellOro.com. Partnership
LXI and Spectra Logic
team to offer mixed media storage to iSeries users LXI Enterprise Storage and Spectra Logic announced a
strategic partnership where LXI's OS/400 Backup Director multi-protocol
bridge-router, an IBM emulation bridge, can connect iSeries/AS400 data center
users to any Spectra Logic library or stand alone drive. The LXI device
allows access to any drive type in a Spectra product, which can include AIT,
LTO, SDLT, SAIT or RXT SabreDisk. The bundled solution is easy to implement,
allows disparate media consolidation, simplified vaulting policies, and for
the first time IT managers can choose from a variety of drive types rather
than being limited to LTO. The flexible LXI OS/400 Backup Director bridge
uses multiple inter-face types and can support multiple connections between a
Spectra Logic library or drive and OS/400 systems. Additionally, Spectra
Logic products provide interoperability between SCSI and Fibre Channel hosts
and devices, linking open systems SAN infrastructures to the backup storage. Visit www.lxi.com or www.SpectraLogic.com. Products
Terion integrates
FleetView trailer tracking with Add On Systems Terion, Inc. and Add On Systems, Inc. announced that they
have completed the first phase of a web-services integration for AS400
dispatch applications. The joint development uses features found in Terion's
FleetView trailer tracking system -- including intelligent event capturing
and reporting technologies -- to power Add On Systems' Trailer Monitoring and
Management (TMMi) application, which features Trailer Detention and Find
Trailer modules. Add On Systems and Terion developed the integration for
carriers that use the iSeries (AS/400) platform. With the new solution,
trailer information is transferred via web services from the Terion web site
to Add On Systems' iSeries platform. The link ties the host dispatch system
to the tractor's mobile communication system -- thereby simplifying the
process of tracking a trailer for usage, location, history or status. The
system is comprised of several optional sub modules, including Trailer
Control, Trailer Pools, Trailer Alerts, Trailer Security, Trailer Utilization
& Reporting and Trailer Detention. Visit www.terion.com

Lightsand
Communications awarded multiple IBM certifications LightSand Communications, Inc. announced that it is
providing the interconnectivity solution support-ing the successful
deployment over 500 km of mission critical architectures implemented by IBM
BCRS for several of its customers in Portugal. The business needs, as
identified by IBM, are driven by the fact that Business Continuity and
Disaster Recovery practices and regulations require that companies maintain a
copy of their business critical application data at a remote location. The
solutions deployed by IBM in this case involve disk mirroring to provide the
highest availability solution for protecting information, remote backup, and
FICON channel extension over MAN/WAN between different cities. The LightSand
i-8100A SAN extension gateway with its SAN Routing and Isolation capabilities
using AR/DAT, and the i-7100F FICON extension gateway, were used to provide
the distant connectivity without perfor-mance degradation. On the basis of
this successful deployment, LightSand solutions received multiple IBM
TotalStorage Proven, IBM System Storage Proven and IBM Total Server Proven
certifications. Visit www.lightsand.com. Return to
