ADC introduces size-reduced Augmented Category 6 UTP cable
ADC announced that it has reduced the size of its CopperTen Augmented Category 6 UTP cable. ADC’s new cable has an average outside diameter of .275” compared to the industry average of .310”, which translates into a 22 percent reduction in cross-sectional area compared to typical Augmented Category 6 cable. The benefits of implementing a smaller cable include enhanced airflow for improved data center cooling, reliability and uptime; reduced installation costs due to its lighter weight and smaller volume; and improved fill rates in cable trays, conduits and raceways. Designed to run 10-Gigabit Ethernet over 100 meters of copper cabling, ADC was able to reduce the size of CopperTen by further enhancing the company’s patented AirES technology. ADC also is introducing its new suite of TrueNet Fiber Plug-and-Play Solutions for data center applications, designed to improve reliability, scalability and cooling needs of modern data centers. The new product suite includes plug-and-play, Multi-Fiber Push-On (MPO) solutions for ADC’s line of TrueNet Fiber products within the main distribution area (MDA), backbone and horizontal and equipment distribution areas (HDA and EDA). Together, these solutions promote reliability in the data center through properly-managed cable density, which encourages proper airflow and reduces maintenance.

Conferences

Perspectives of a first-time conference attendee
BICSI is a professional association supporting the information transport systems (ITS) industry with information, education and knowledge assessment for individuals and companies. BICSI provides attendees at each conference with a First Timer’s Orientation to present a basic understanding of what to expect and how to get the most value out of their conference experience. Attendees learn about earning important continuing education credits, conference sessions and events, the BICSI Cares charity and the benefits of BICSI membership. Educational presentations are the core of every BICSI conference. This year’s Winter Conference featured presenters covering topics including AV, standards, HD TV and video, convergence, cabling and outside plant. Aside from the presentations, the Exhibit Hall is the hotspot at a conference. There were 209 exhibitors displaying products and solutions, ready to answer questions and present what their company has to offer. BICSI serves more than 24,000 ITS professionals, including designers, installers and technicians.

Intermec

Intermec partners with NASA
Intermec Inc. announced a cooperative research effort with the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center to investigate new Automatic Identification Tracking (AIT) System technologies. New technologies to be developed will qualify machine-readable symbol markings and RFID devices for use on space-borne vehicles.  To aid in developing the new technologies, Intermec will evaluate markings that have been exposed to low earth orbit environments during the third and fourth Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) missions. Intermec also will prepare additional marked samples and soft and rigid RFID tags to be included in MISSE 6, scheduled for July 2007. The part identification markings and tags -- which remain readable after exposure to the extreme levels of ultraviolet radiation, atomic oxygen, hard vacuum, and contamination in low earth orbit -- will be evaluated and then certified for use on future space vehicles and added to NASA's part identification requirements.

Newly upgraded Intermec IF5 RFID Reader named a top performer
Intermec Inc. announced that its newly upgraded IF5 Fixed RFID Reader was ranked the top performer in adjacent dock door use by U.S. RFID testing lab ODIN technologies. Upgraded to read more tags per second and deliver increased radio frequency sensitivity and reliability, the IF5 was rated comparable or superior to top performing competitive readers, matched the read rate -- number of tags read per unit time -- of the fastest competitor and scored in the "highly sensitive" reader category.  The Intermec IF5 is a fixed "smart" reader that can run business intelligence and decision making processes at the point of activity, filter information from tags, monitor external sensors and control audible/visual indicators. Users implementing the reader avoid the expense and potential point of failure of a separate server "box" required by other RFID scanning solutions. As with all Intermec reader products, the IF5 both reads and writes to ISO and Gen 2 RFID tags.

Carlo Gavazzi Computing Solutions offers new XP-9E
Carlo Gavazzi Computing Solutions announces its XP-9E PCI expansion system to support applications requiring PCI cards.  The XP-9E is a 4U rackmount enclosure that accommodates eight full-length, full-height PCI cards and integrates seamlessly into the PCI Express bus of new application servers that do not provide support for full-size or low profile PCI cards.  The XP-9E expansion system allows end users deploying PCI-based applications to adopt advanced application servers based on their needs, rather than on the number of available PCI slots.  This expansion solution dramatically reduces the cost of replacing an entire server for slot incompatibility while also protecting users’ server choice.

Security

PowerTech looks to OpenService for cross-platform security
To help iSeries shops get a handle on cross-platform security problems, PowerTech is teaming up with OpenService to bring greater OS/400 depth to OpenService's security event correlation and reporting tools. OpenService sells a collection of security tools, which it classifies as Security Information Event Management (SIEM). Under this SIEM umbrella lays the company's flagship Security Management Center (SMC), which provides a framework that brings together various aspects of security--including threat management, log management, security policy compliance, and regulatory compliance--that's accessed in real-time from a dashboard interface. The SMC offering is split into two components. The Security Threat Manager is a real-time security event correlation engine that gathers data from the various supported devices, and compares it to information from vulnerability assessment scans to determine the areas of an IT infrastructure that are at risk. The second component of SMC, called the Security Log Manager, is composed of a large database that stores data gathered by the Security Threat Manager for the sake of creating reports over time. The Log Manager is often used forensically, to answer questions about security events, and also for regulatory compliance reporting.

TERiX announces free Daylight Saving Time Solaris solution
TERiX announced it will offer on its website a “free-of-charge” Daylight Saving Time (DST) public domain solution to the SUN Microsystems Solaris user community running versions 2.5.1, 2.6 and 2.7 legacy operating systems.  With the advent of new DST dates beginning March 11 this year, Solaris users require a software patch in order for the operating system to correctly calculate the time change.  While Sun provides a public patch for Solaris 8, 9 and 10, no free public patch was available for legacy versions of Solaris until now.  TERiX created the DST patch for its clients running versions of Solaris no longer supported by the manufacturer, then decided to release the free patch into public domain as a service to the Solaris user community.
