HP breaks record for annual page growth in digital printing
HP announced that it set new industry records in digital printing in calendar year 2006, surpassing several milestones that signify an acceleration in its Indigo digital press business, including: number of annual impressions printed on HP Indigo surpassed 10 billion; single-month record with more than 1 billion impressions printed in November; and HP Indigo year-over-year impressions grew by 40 percent. Marketers, publishers, consumer product companies and consumers are increasingly using digital print technology to produce everything from marketing collateral and direct mail to photo merchandise and books and manuals. Digital print technology, like that found in HP Indigo presses, offers great value and convenience with its ability to print in small runs while also providing offset-quality imaging.

HP makes data backup and recovery easy for small and medium-size businesses
HP introduced a disk-based backup and recovery system that makes data protection and disaster recovery simple, reliable and affordable. Designed expressly for the business continuity and IT needs of small and medium businesses (SMBs), the new HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System automates and centralizes backup to provide reliable data protection for up to four servers in a single, secure, self-managing device.
The HP D2D Backup System integrates into existing network-based IT environments and can be configured and managed in three intuitive steps. Daily backups become fully automatic, reducing the risk of human error and hardware problems. Restoring lost or corrupted files also becomes easier because backup data is stored online, where it can be restored in minutes instead of hours.

QLogic collaborates with HP on Virtual Connect Fibre Channel module
QLogic Corp. announced a collaboration with HP on its breakthrough Virtual Connect technology, an industry-changing approach to connecting and adapting server, local area network (LAN) and storage area network (SAN) domains across the data center. QLogic worked closely with HP to deliver the Virtual Connect Fibre Channel module that is now available for HP BladeSystem c-Class servers. HP's Virtual Connect Ethernet and
Fibre Channel modules dramatically simplify LAN and SAN connections and make IT "change ready." By reducing cables without adding managed switches and cleanly separating the management of server enclosures from LAN and SAN management, the modules allow administrators to quickly and easily add or remove servers without disrupting business.

In-Stat reports adoption of managed services among global enterprises set to increase
Managed Network Services (MNS) adoption will increase over the next two years among large, globally focused businesses, reports In-Stat. A survey by the high-tech market research firm of IT and network managers in companies of more than 1,000 employees shows that most globally focused firms currently perform network functions in-house. Out-tasking will soon gain acceptance, however, due to increased network complexity and convergence. “In two years, nearly 40% of survey respondents in the areas of PBX/Phone System Management and Telecom Expense Management indicate that these functions will be out-tasked,” says Jeff Jernigan, In-Stat analyst. “Within two years, MNS adoption rates will roughly double for security, storage and hosting, with nearly one-third of respondents indicating these functions will be out-tasked.” Recent research by In-Stat found that 84% of global firms that are MNS adopters are more likely to buy additional services as future complexity increases.

Poll
Deloitte poll shows many companies lack formal guidelines against pretexting in internal investigations
Despite recent legal actions against companies that engage in pretexting and other illegal techniques to investigate fraud, misconduct, or simply to obtain confidential competitor information, 42 percent of organizations responded that they currently do not have written guidelines against the use of such methods of investigation, according to an online poll conducted by Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP (Deloitte FAS). The online poll also revealed that among the more common types of investigations, fraud and human resource investigations appear to give rise to difficult legal or ethical questions about investigative techniques. Lower responses were registered for other types of investigations, such as for due diligence, trade secret and theft/embezzlement. The Federal Trade Commission defines pretexting as the practice of obtaining personal financial information under false pretenses. The practice of pretexting has become prevalent in recent years and state and federal regulators are aggressively pursing offenders. Congress has also passed a law banning the pretexting of telephone companies.

Editorial
It went virtually un-noticed within our industry. IBM and Ricoh timed the announcement such that no one would pay much attention. This is a shocker: Ricoh is buying IBM's Printer Systems Division (PSD)! Ricoh has been making engines for the IBM midrange printers for some time now. It is clear that IBM wants out of the hardware business, having sold off much of its own production capacity. This move comes as quite a shock, yet there are some excellent opportunities ahead that I'll balance against the problems this may cause. (Link to full editorial.)
