Convergence
Mitel, Sun deliver converged voice and data applications
Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Mitel Networks Corp. announced they have entered into a global OEM agreement that will help drive the use of converged voice and data applications in multi-tenant environments. Mitel’s unified communications call control software will be integrated into industry-standard Sun Microsystems servers for enterprise and carrier hosted and customer premise environments. Sun and Mitel have also created a unified solution offering with Mitel’s award winning contact center software on Sun Ray ultra-thin client hardware. The Multi-Instance Call Server (MICS) allows as many as 200 compartmentalized instances of the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (IPC) call control software to run simultaneously within Sun Fire X4200 and X4600 servers. The MICS allows multiple businesses, departments and offices to share the same server, but use a specific version of call control software and use the features and functions that meet their particular needs.
Sun and Mitel have also announced the planned integration of the Sun Ray IP Phone Bundle. This solution allows for a single hot desk sign-on for both the Sun Ray ultra-thin client terminal and the Mitel IP phone. The Mitel stand, portable to any Mitel set, has a Java Card technology slot to allow for Sun Ray and Mitel IP phone hotdesking. This small footprint device delivers all of the traditional Sun Ray features with lower power consumption than a separate phone and thin client, delivered at an attractive price. The Sun Ray IP Phone Bundle is particularly well-suited for cost and security-sensitive environments such as contact centers, education, healthcare, service providers, and financial services.

Intermec
Intermec introduces the first rugged handheld computer with integrated EX25 near/far imaging technology
Intermec introduces the CK31ex, the first handheld computer with integrated near-far area imaging technology that can read virtually any symbology from six inches to 50 feet. The CK31ex enables warehouse workers to consolidate their computing, data capture and documentation needs in a single device, improving productivity and reducing costs. Its extended range means that companies can apply the benefits of area imaging across their total warehouse operations, existing and future, opening up new application opportunities and efficiencies. The CK31ex is the first device to integrate the Intermec Intellibeam EX25 auto-focus near-far scan engine, which delivers an array of benefits. It reads and decodes 1D and 2D bar codes as well as composite and postal codes, from near or far, in any orientation. It can also read bar codes printed on plain paper at long distances, eliminating the need for expensive retro-reflective label media.

Intermec and GATC introduce Skynax R6
Intermec introduces Skynax R6, a software-based solution that provides a unified platform for mobile communications, data management, remote device management and security in mobile computing systems. Intermec collaborated with GATC, a privately-held software development company and Intermec Premier Honours Partner, to create this new generation of software. Skynax enables highly-scalable, fault-tolerant and secure mobile data communications through WWAN mobile phone networks, WLAN, wired Ethernet and dial-up connections. Its advanced communications handling capabilities are leveraged through a distributed, server-based architecture that provides a framework for extensible and reusable data management components. These customizable components are used to control the flow of business data (exchange and process files, remotely query and manipulate records in an SQL database and even handle streaming data) between mobile business applications and back-office business data repositories located in a company's internal network. In addition, complete, remote device management functionality is available within Skynax through an easy to use Microsoft Windows based management console.

Slow computers plague small businesses
System performance is number one on the top-five list of technology problems small businesses face, according to recent data from support.com. The Redwood City, Calif.-based technology problem resolution software maker SupportSoft Inc. launched the support.com remote support service for consumers and small or home-based enterprises. Since then support.com's call center, located in Syracuse, N.Y., has been compiling statistics based on the kinds of support calls it has been receiving and has come up with the top five problems, which account for 85 per cent of calls.
At the top of the list is system performance, accounting for 32 per cent of calls. Application issues came in second at 22 per cent of support calls. Users typically face difficulties such as e-mail application and browser problems as well as the installation and configuration of new applications. Fourteen per cent of the calls that came in to support.com were for operating system problems, including corrupted network settings and out-of-date device drivers. One particular problem plaguing small businesses is around the incompatibilities between Windows XP and Vista. While customers would be very hard-pressed to buy a new computer that isn't running Vista, many small-business networks are still XP based. Security issues accounted for nine per cent of calls, focusing on virus or spyware problems that have compromised the security of a consumer's computer. Finally, eight per cent of calls came in from customers frustrated by an inability to print.
