High speed data transport
NetEx HyperIP acceleration software scales to wire speeds
NetEx announced a new version of its award winning HyperIP software technology that boosts performance by almost 50 percent to deliver near-native wire speed performance of 800 Mb/s and currently residing on a non-proprietary, off-the-shelf Intel appliance. This new speed standard enables NetEx customers to purchase the HyperIP data acceleration solution on an industry standard platform at 1.5 Mb/s and then add performance as needed up to 800 Mb/s all in the same appliance with no hardware upgrades required. As bandwidth requirements grow performance upgrades are accomplished by supplying a non-disruptive software key, allowing users to pay only for what they need while providing true investment protection. Every HyperIP appliance is a complete turnkey solution with advanced features, including TCP application acceleration to mitigate latency, packet loss shield to protect against variable circuit quality conditions that can disrupt and degrade application performance, block-level adaptive compression for up to a 15x performance boost, and application aggregation.

Independent maintenance
NHR unveils NetSure hardware maintenance program
Network Hardware Resale (NHR) unveiled NetSure, an innovative hardware maintenance program that provides substantial savings over traditional manufacturer maintenance with unprecedented flexibility to meet varying network support requirements. The enhanced service offering is available for most currently deployed network gear throughout North America. With NetSure, companies have access to 24x7 technical support and advanced, next-day hardware replacement at 50-to-90 percent off OEM contracts, such as Cisco’s SMARTnet service. Around-the-clock support is provided by a team of Cisco-certified technicians that provide customized coverage of network core, distribution and access layers. NetSure also provides an extra layer of protection for previous-generation gear and end-of-life network equipment, such as Cisco’s 6500 Series Switches, which boast an installed base of more than 350,000 units but are no longer eligible for new SMARTnet support contracts. Enhanced NetSure support includes installation assistance, configuration review and advanced troubleshooting for rapid issue resolution on a variety of platforms.

900 jobs lost as Dell bolts
Dell Canada will close its Edmonton call centre after only three years, putting more than 900 people out of work. The computer giant said the city's hot economy and the strong Canadian dollar were partially responsible for the decision to close the facility. Dell came to Edmonton after signing a 20-year lease deal at Edmonton Research Park, and has consistently touted the call centre as a top-performing global facility. The deal with Edmonton Economic Development Corp. included a $1-a-year lease on 12 acres of land and a five-year property tax rebate worth $1.1 million. It becomes void if the number of employees drops below 500. At the time, EEDC said the concessions -- a first for the organization -- would be worth the extra $30 million a year in economic activity for the city. EEDC president Ron Gilbertson said the decision to make concessions was the right one at the time. The Canadian dollar was low and there were many people looking for jobs, he said. Mayor Stephen Mandel, who said he thinks Dell owes retroactive property taxes, was "quite disappointed" with the news. He said he thought bad news was coming after Michael Dell's warning last May of 9,000 company-wide job cuts.

Xerox lauded for technology innovation
Xerox Corporation kicked off the 2008 Photo Marketing Association Show by winning two Digital Imaging Marketing Association Innovative Digital Product Awards. Xerox products recognized include the Xerox DocuColor 5000 Digital Press with Xerox Document Binder 120-D/Coverbind 101 DFS and the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server with JPEG Plug-in. The awards recognize products utilizing new technologies and applications that make them distinct and first of a kind. The new configuration of the DocuColor 5000 Digital Press maximizes productivity by enabling print providers and photo retailers and labs to print and finish materials in-line, resulting in complete photo specialty products coming off the end of the press and ready for customers.
The FreeFlow Print Server with JPEG Plug-in allows users to print raw JPEG image files without having to pre-process them through separate photo editing software.

DataCore solutions are “Citrix Ready”
DataCore Software Corporation announced that DataCore SANmelody and SANsymphony virtual storage SAN solutions are among the first solutions to be verified for Citrix XenServer in the Citrix Ready program. DataCore is currently validating additional Citrix Ready solutions, including DataCore storage virtualization with Citrix Provisioning Server and Citrix XenDesktop, individually and in combination with Citrix XenServer. The Citrix Ready program recognizes Citrix partner products that have been validated by Citrix and/or partners to work in Citrix environments, making it simpler for customers to identify solutions that can be used with confidence in Citrix environments. DataCore solutions convert standard Intel/AMD servers or even virtual machines (VMs) into fully capable storage servers that virtualize disks and serve them over existing networks to application servers. They are simple to operate, take only minutes to install, and cost-effectively optimize, manage and protect data storage and disk space.
