IBM

IBM touts new mainframe as 'most powerful' business system yet
IBM is calling its new System z10 mainframe a "commercial supercomputer" and hoping that the machine can capture some geek mind share via features such as a quad-core processor that runs at a clock speed 2.6 times faster than the chips in IBM's z9 model could manage. The z10 is sleek black in color and imperial in stature at a height of 80 inches and a maximum weight of 5,000-plus pounds. And the system certainly has its ooh-and-ahh elements, including its 4.4-GHz quad-core processor. That compares with the 1.7-GHz single-core processor used in the three-year-old z9. The new system also supports up to 1.5TB of available memory per system and InfiniBand data rates of up to 6GB/sec., more than two times faster than on the z9. According to IBM, the z10 is designed to run up to 50% faster than the z9 overall and can deliver as much as twice the performance of the existing model on CPU-intensive applications.

User opinions on announcement of System z10 Enterprise Class
SHARE Inc., an independent association of IT professionals who utilize enterprise-class IBM technology, offered user opinions on a recent IBM Corporation announcement. IBM Corporation announced its latest high-end enterprise class server, the IBM System z10 Enterprise Class (System z10 EC), which promises to deliver improved price performance, scalability and security. Skip Robinson, SHARE Volunteer and user of System z technology, notes, To provide some perspective on the value of this new system, the high-end model of System z10 EC has more than 100,000 times the CPU processing power and 100 million times the memory of some of the earliest machines, with a fraction of the footprint and power consumption. Another long-time SHARE Volunteer and user of System z technology, Brian Peterson, adds, I think it is critically important that IBM continues to evolve this platform, adopting industry standards like Fibre Channel as well as recent adoption of InifiBand technology for the ‘internal to the machine’ data bus and for the ‘machine to machine’ links used by IBMs Parallel Sysplex.”

Emerson Network Power’s Liebert power, cooling and monitoring products and services are among the most trusted technologies for critical data center applications.
