Employment

Despite economy, IT employment soars
The turn-of-the-millennium recession caused a lot of pain in the IT industry and the channel. Scores of people who enjoyed good pay and benefits during the 1990s were laid off. But this isn’t 2001 anymore, and it turns out IT is faring considerably better than other industries in the current economic slowdown. Staffing firm Jobfox concluded in a recent report that the IT industry has some of the most recession-proof jobs out there. Based on job vacancies, the firm found the IT industry has more high-demand professions than any other industry. The highest-demand profession currently is for sales representatives/business development professionals, according to the Top 20 Most Recession-Proof Professions list, which Jobfox compiled after analyzing statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor. Sales rep is a broad category that includes jobs in the IT industry. The same goes for administrative assistant and finance staff, which ranked seventh and 10th, respectively.

But Jobfox’s list also included IT-specific jobs, four of which are in the top 10 -- software design and development (which ranked second); networking/systems administration (sixth); business analysis: software implementation (eighth); and business analysis: research (ninth). The Top 20 also included the IT-specific occupations database administration (14th) and technology executive (16th), in addition to the following categories, which also cover IT: project management (11th), testing/quality assurance (12th), product management (13th), account/customer support (15th); and sales executive (18th). Jobfox’s figures cover the time period from last November through July 7. The company’s findings support another recent report, this one from the trade association NACCB (National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses), saying that U.S. IT employment reached an all-time high in June, at 3.9 million.

HP

HP certified to manage customers’ IT asset disposition
HP has been recognized as a certified IT Asset Disposal vendor by IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and advice. In evaluating and certifying HPs IT asset disposal capabilities, IDC noted that business customers can have confidence in the companys ability to safely and securely decommission IT assets they no longer need whether those assets are made by HP or another manufacturer. IDCs Green Recycling and Asset Disposal for the Enterprise (G.R.A.D.E.) certification process was focused on the U.S. market and considered 34 separate functions and tasks. According to IDC, it used a multidimensional weighting system that incorporates the broad offerings of remote applications, on-site services, logistics, in-plant processing and post treatment.
Certification criteria cover manufacturing processes and end-of-use practices, including managing disposition of IT equipment in an environmentally sound fashion and helping customers safeguard proprietary information.

IBM

IBM adds new power systems to AS/400 and iSeries removal program
To help encourage customers first with vintage AS/400s and then iSeries gear as time rolled by to move to newer machinery, IBM has been offering customers a no-charge service to remove the older gear from your site when you get a new box. Recently IBM extended its AS/400 and eServer iSeries no-charge removal offering, whereby IBM will pick up and responsibly and ecologically dispose of that vintage machine if customers buy new machines. That offering was set most recently for Power5 and Power5+ System i5 520, 515, 525, 550, 570 and 595 machines, and with the update, customers acquiring Power Systems 520, 550, 570 and 595 gear, which is based on Power6 processors, can also have IBM cope with the old gear. That old gear can be any AS/400 machine.

IBM to invest $1.5B in New York
IBM agreed to invest $1.5 billion U.S. for computer-chip manufacturing and research in New York state, creating 1,000 new jobs aided by $140 million in government subsidies. The agreement, announced by the company and state officials, also calls for the company to retain more than 1,000 existing jobs at its East Fishkill research and manufacturing facilities, which are to be upgraded, according to a statement by Gov. David Paterson. New facilities include a semiconductor manufacturing plant and development center in a still-to-be-determined upstate New York location.

Storage

IBM and Sun hit 1 TB
Sun Microsystems and IBM have announced they will break the 1 TB barrier for tape drives with their next generation of enterprise drives. Sun revealed it will ship the Sun StorageTek T10000B in July, while IBM followed by launching the IBM System Storage TS1130 due to ship in September. Sun and IBM have a lock on the enterprise tape market, which consists largely of mainframe customers and open system companies in the life science, high-performance computing and financial services markets. IBM claims a faster data transfer rate than Sun with its 1 TB tape drives. IBM's drive has a transfer rate of 160 Mbps compared to Sun's transfer rate of 120 Mbps. IDC analyst Robert Amatruda said the new drives show tape vendors are advancing the technology as tape faces increasing competition from backup and archiving alternatives, such as SATA drives, virtual tape libraries (VTL), removable disk and optical media.
