UAF offers one-piece, quick-mount assembly unit
Thanks to Universal Air Filter’s expanding, one-piece assembly unit, which includes a filter, mounting bracket, fan guard and air flow plenum, design engineers or end-users no longer need to specify multiple parts to serve the same function. Clients also can install the air filter media quickly without complex installation kits and procedures. To ensure a prompt mount of the assembly, Universal Air Filter can match an existing hole pattern or provide captive fasteners and high-bond adhesive tapes. In addition, UAF offers special metal finishes to match existing enclosures and/or provide protection in corrosive indoor or outdoor environments. Filters with Quadrafoam media also provide an additional layer of protection for flammability, ultraviolet light, hydrolytic stability and fungus resistance. The low-profile assembly unit can be used for new design or field retrofit and can be configured to meet UL and/or other safety standards for finger and tool probe safety tests.

HP
HP encourages CIOs to rethink virtualization in business terms
HP announced new products, services and solutions designed to simplify the implementation and management of virtualization so that the technology delivers greater business value. Recent global research conducted on behalf of HP revealed that while 86 percent of technology decision makers have implemented virtualization projects, the vast majority of respondents expect to have virtualized just 25 percent of their technology environments by 2010. While many of those surveyed anticipate eventually reaching 75 percent virtualization of their total environments, only one-third of these technology implementers recognize virtualization as a valuable business tool. Two-thirds of implementers relegate virtualization to the role of technology enabler. HP’s approach to virtualization is focused on removing the technology inhibitors that reduce virtualization’s impact on the business. It highlights how applications and business services can perform well regardless of where and how they are hosted, networked or managed. It dramatically simplifies management across a combined virtual and physical world, and it addresses the issue of pooling infrastructure resources across an organization.

Arrow ECS to provide EMC Global Financial Services leasing solutions for resellers
Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions announced an agreement with EMC Corporation to provide leasing services to its reseller partners through EMC Global Financial Services. Arrow ECS and EMC will provide contract and portfolio management support to EMC reseller partners for services such as preparing financing quotes on solution configurations for end-user customers – saving time and money for resellers. The EMC leasing program also improves working capital for resellers by shortening their cash flow cycle by approximately 20 days on leasing transactions. Resellers benefit from the program by earning fees on most transactions as well. In addition, partners may visit with an Arrow ECS financing consultant for recommendations on financial solutions for their business and their customers, or to schedule a full-day workshop to educate their sales team on integrating financial solutions to capture more sales.

Market
HPC server market shows robust growth in second quarter
Factory revenue and unit shipments for the High Performance Computing (HPC) technical server market exhibited 10% growth in the second quarter (2Q08), according to IDC's Worldwide High-Performance Technical Server QView. Revenues grew 10% over the first quarter and 4% compared to the same period last year to reach $2.5 billion in the second quarter. Shipments of server system units in the 2Q08 HPC market totaled 45,000, down 5% from the first quarter. The second quarter saw solid growth in the mid and high end of the market and softness in lower priced x86 servers, as evidenced by average selling prices (ASPs) that were up 16% compared to 1Q08. According to Jie Wu, research manager for technical computing, the 2Q08 HPC server revenue leaders were HP with 37% market share, IBM with 27%, and Dell with 16%. The HPC portion of the overall server market follows a different pattern due to the nature of spending on R&D projects. Because government and university buyers have longer-term budget cycles that are not immediately impacted by economic slow downs, economic shifts typically take more than a year to work their way into these budgets. In addition, many industrial buyers are still investing in R&D to improve their competitiveness in the tighter economy.

RFID
Active RFID in China
The US and China vie for the title of the world’s largest RFID market, this year seeing them level pegging with $1.3 billion of business, which is looking to quintuple in the next ten years. In 2007, the IDTechEx Knowledgebase of over 3,500 RFID projects in 109 countries added 156 new RFID projects in the US. China was number two by this measure, with 105 projects, which though fewer in number, were larger in size. In the US, much of the RFID use consists of active RFID where there is a battery in the tag. Examples are tracking military assets and Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) for staff and assets in hospitals. By contrast, China has been pre-eminent in using passive tags, notably contactless ID and payment cards, tickets and tagging of library books. However, RFID is a government priority in China, both to create a new industry supplying RFID and to see greater use of it in order to increase the competitiveness of the nation. To these ends, active RFID is now a priority as well. One example of its current use is in coal mining for staff safety, asset tracking and logistics, each are funded by the Chinese Government through its “RFID China Alliance”.

Sun Microsystems strikes multi-million dollar deal with Stésud
When it identified that its existing software infrastructure needed refreshing, Belgium-based Stésud looked to Java as the technology upon which to build the company's new platform. An enterprise resource planning ERP provider with eGovernment clients that include the Belgian government, Stésud evaluated several solutions and selected Sun's GlassFish application server. As part of this multi-million dollar deal, Stésud also employed Sun's MySQL Enterprise subscription, allowing the company to dependably migrate to a more scalable and reliable Web database architecture for the future. Selected for its competitive pricing and performance levels, this deployment will allow Stésud to run its existing applications, in addition to new ones that it previously would have been unable to support.
