Fixed Mobile ConvergenceVoice over IP Security
We in the telecommunications domain struggle with security issues constantly and much of our attention is focused on IP networks. The relatively recent emergence and rapid rise in popularity of Voice over IP (VoIP) has heightened those concerns considerably. Voice over IP Security, by Patrick Park, can help. The book is organized into three parts. Part I comprises five chapters that, taken together, do a very good job of explaining the fundamentals of VoIP security, including sources of vulnerability, threat taxonomy, security profiles in VoIP protocols (H.323, SIP and MGCP), cryptography and VoIP network elements. Part II is a thorough discussion of VoIP security best practices in four chapters. Part III comprises two final chapters on lawful interceptions. This is a solid piece of work and deserving of a spot on your bookshelf..

Cisco

Contractor who defrauded Cisco gets 5-year term
A federal judge has sentenced a former Newark city contractor to five years in prison for a scam that defrauded a prominent computer company of several million dollars. Michael Kyereme, of Piscataway, provided technical support for Newark and was authorized to buy replacement computer parts from Cisco Systems. The 41-year-old admitted that over several years he falsely claimed various computer parts had failed, and then ordered replacement equipment that he later sold for personal gain. The scam defrauded San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco of nearly $4.2 million. Prosecutors say that Kyereme, who was sentenced recently, resold the parts in California. He pleaded guilty in July to mail fraud and tax evasion.

Power

New market research report available
Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:  AC-DC Power Supplies: Economic Factors, Application Drivers, Architecture/Packaging Trends, Regulatory and Technology Developments, Ninth Edition.  Despite a global economic slowdown, the outlook for the worldwide embedded ac-dc power supply market is expected to remain strong. Evolving powering architectures, packaging trends and global standards for improvements in energy efficiency are combining with developments in advanced components and new markets for ac-dc power and to create new opportunities for makers of ac-dc power supplies.

Two particularly significant technological and architectural trends include the continued move towards single-output power supplies and the further adoption of front-end power supplies. Evidence of this can be seen in the complexity of today’s electronics applications, which use an increasing number of voltage rails, making multiple-output power supplies impractical in many devices. This can be seen in applications ranging from personal computers and plasma TVs to servers and Ethernet switches. Higher–end devices present even more opportunities, as modern telecommunications and data communications are deploying ac front ends as the primary means of converting ac mains voltage to the more useable voltages required by logic devices, auxiliary/peripheral devices, and/or alternate point-of-load regulators and dc-dc converters. Hot swap capability and the need to parallel ac-dc front ends for redundancy in mission critical facilities will also act as a driving factor.
