Book review

Fiber Optic Systems for TelecommunicationsFiber-Optic Systems for Telecommunications
Reviewed by William A. Flanagan

Densely written, this volume evenly balances the theory with the practice. The first half gets deep into the technical details, from the physical construction of fibers and couplers to the light signaling formats and data frames that carry information. The second half looks at the practical aspects, with a thorough chapter on computing the power budget and optimal input power for an optical link.

Here you can find the features and functions of the different lasers, filters, couplers and amplifiers that carry light pulses over land and under sea. Freeman gets down to the way the light encodes 1's and 0's. Nice summaries explain the impairments that affect FO links, from connector loss to non-linear optical effects caused by high power density. SONET, still a workhorse of telecom transmission systems, gets a complete review, including the formats of containers, multiplexing, signaling channels and other header content. Past the midpoint, Freeman shifts to the practice of optical networking. Separate chapters focus on power budgets, planning and installation, availability, fiber selection and optical switching systems.

In the back there's a good list of acronyms and a long (22 pages) index.

Financing

IBM offers financing for servers bundled with VMware vSphere 4
IBM is offering special financing for its System x family of servers that are bundled with VMware's vSphere 4 virtualization platform in a move that aims to make it easier for businesses to bring virtualization into their data centers. The financing plan, which essentially trades hefty up-front costs for more manageable monthly payments and can be used on purchases as small as $5,000, covers IBM's entire line of x86 systems, including rack and tower models as well as BladeCenter blade systems. It also includes the System x3950, which VMware used as its reference platform while developing vSphere 4's scalability capabilities. The goal of the financing package, which was announced June 30 and will run for the rest of 2009, is to offer businesses a way of adopting virtualization technology during these recessionary times, when money is tight, according to Alex Yost, vice president of IBM's Systems and Technology Group. IBM is planning to extend the financing plan to its iDataPlex servers later in 2009.

HP

HP expands server offerings to help telecoms reduce costs in telephony and IT networks
HP expanded its telecom hardware portfolio with powerful, carrier-grade versions of the company’s most advanced enterprise servers and storage products. The new offerings provide telecom companies the reliability set by NEBS requirements, as well as the lower cost and flexibility of industry-standard products. Targeted at service providers and network equipment suppliers, the products include the HP BladeSystem Carrier-Grade (CG) platform, the HP ProLiant carrier-grade rack-mount server and the HP carrier-grade storage array. The new products can be deployed in both telephony and IT networks, enabling customers to operate more efficiently as the two environments converge. The two HP carrier-grade platforms support a variety of operating environments, including Windows, Linux, HP-UX, OpenVMS and Solaris from Sun Microsystems. By joint agreement, HP will distribute and provide full software support for Sun Solaris 10 on HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem platforms.

IBM

IBM issues Corporate Responsibility Report
IBM issued its Corporate Responsibility Report, detailing the company's social performance results and strategies in the areas of governance, supply chain, environment, community engagements, employment policies and practices, and public policy. The 40-page report features IBM's Corporate Service Corps on its cover, a program IBM characterizes as a corporate version of the Peace Corps, to develop a next wave of IBM leaders while addressing critical societal challenges in emerging markets in innovative ways. The report demonstrates how fully integrating business and social strategies can make significant and lasting impacts in communities. Another program described is IBM's work in the Sichuan province in China, the area stricken by a powerful earthquake last year where teams of IBMers engaged in the relief and recovery effort using their technology skills.

Power

Emerson Network Power introduces Liebert XD Smart Modules
Emerson Network Power has enhanced its Liebert XD family of high heat density cooling solutions with the addition of Liebert XD Smart Modules – cooling modules upgraded with integrated control boards to enable higher efficiency performance. Liebert XD Smart Modules reduce energy consumption by controlling cooling fans based on the cooling load at each individual module. The Smart Modules are supported by the Liebert XDP pumping unit, which has been upgraded with the Liebert iCOM control system to improve system monitoring and control. Liebert XD Smart Modules are available on Liebert XDV rack-mount, Liebert XDH in-the-row, and Liebert XDO ceiling-mount cooling modules. These cooling modules use pumped refrigerant, which is ideal for use around electronic equipment. They work together to provide high heat density cooling at the source of the heat, and work well in hot aisle/cold aisle configurations with room-based precision cooling. With the addition of Liebert XD Smart Modules, the system achieves greater energy efficiencies through optimized cooling fan operation of multi-fan modules.

Sun

Sun Microsystems unveils VirtualBox 3.0
Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced a significant new version of Sun VirtualBox, its high performance, cross-platform virtualization software. VirtualBox 3.0 is capable of creating and running multi-processor virtual machines that can handle heavyweight server-class workloads, and also delivers enhanced graphics support for desktop-class workloads, reinforcing VirtualBox's position as one of the world's most popular virtualization platforms. Many multi-threaded server-based workloads, such as database and Web applications, can benefit from Symmetric Multiple Processing (SMP) systems, which contain multiple CPUs. VirtualBox 3.0 can now support virtual SMP systems with up to 32 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) in a single virtual machine. With this major enhancement, VirtualBox software can be used to run not only desktop workloads on client or server systems, but also demanding server workloads.
