Intermec

Odom increases capabilities and lowers TCO with Intermec CK3 and Vocollect Voice
Intermec Technologies announced that the leading Alaska and Pacific Northwest beverage distributor The Odom Corporation has deployed the Intermec CK3 mobile computer featuring Vocollect Voice. The solution enhances operational efficiencies, inventory accuracy, worker productivity, and reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the mobile systems in Odom’s warehouse. During the day, Odom uses the CK3 in tandem with the Retalix Power Warehouse WMS to replenish and check inventory. Using the CK3’s EX25 Near/Far 2D Imager Engine – the market’s first barcode scan engine with integrated near/far area imaging technology – Odom mobile workers are able to read 1D and 2D barcodes, omni-directionally up to 50 feet away. The EX25 greatly increases image quality and scanning speeds, and as a result, Odom’s operational efficiencies. At night, Odom uses Vocollect Voice software running on the CK3 with Vocollect headsets to load trucks. Using the two-way voice application, mobile workers can operate the CK3 in “hands free” mode – improving productivity, safety, accuracy and operational efficiency.

Tripp Lite continues green initiative with energy efficient UPS systems
In an effort to further its green initiative, Tripp Lite has developed its latest line of SmartOnline Single-Phase UPS Systems to incorporate an Economy Mode function. Operating in Economy Mode, the SmartOnline Series, from 1000-16000VA, boasts an industry-leading efficiency rating of up to 97%, which in turn leads to less heat built up in data centers, lower energy consumption and dramatic savings in both cooling and energy costs. Tripp Lite has long been at the forefront of the green initiative, realizing early on that engineering energy-efficient products not only made sense from an environmental perspective, but from a business perspective as well. By offering products that reduce corporate CO2 emissions and, consequently, operational costs, Tripp Lite provides its customers with a competitive edge that helps them succeed in today’s dynamic marketplace. The new SmartOnline models are poised to be the most effective yet, with their cumulative reduction of energy, expenditures and environmental impact.

New LineGuard surge suppressors protect vulnerable data lines
Para Systems, Inc. announced the release of a new line of data line surge suppressors designed to protect equipment from being damaged by electrical surges or spikes.  The new Minuteman LineGuard products are intended to protect analog and digital surveillance cameras, DVRs, plus other network peripherals, including devices using Power Over Ethernet (POE). Minuteman’s LineGuard products incorporate solid-state surge protection technology with a response time of two to five nanoseconds, clamping the surge to ground and automatically resetting itself after a low-voltage surge occurs.  If a catastrophic surge such as lightning does hit a data line, the LineGuard product provides fail-safe protection, sometimes sacrificing itself to prevent damage to the more expensive devices it was designed to defend.

Security

SANS and IBM identify unpatched client-side application software as top enterprise IT security issue
The SANS Institute report, The Top Cyber Security Risks, states that neglecting the fundamentals of prompt and thorough patch and management for client-side application software poses the highest priority threat to the integrity of enterprise information security. According to SANS, large organizations typically take at least twice as long to patch client-side vulnerabilities compared to patching operating system vulnerabilities. From this, SANS concludes, "The highest priority risk is getting less attention than the lower priority risk." The IBM X-Force Mid Year Trend and Risk Report reconfirms points made in the SANS report, describing how hackers launch increasingly sophisticated blended threats to target data they can monetize immediately. Both studies validate BigFix's approach to security and vulnerability management processes -- the need to provide customers with a consolidated, single-pane-of-glass approach to address the complete asset discovery, vulnerability assessment and remediation lifecycle across heterogeneous, widely distributed enterprise IT infrastructures.

Sun

Sun Microsystems boosts performance across industry-leading Unified Storage portfolio
Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced key technology enhancements and rapid customer adoption rates across its Unified Storage systems portfolio that extend the performance and data protection capabilities of the Sun Storage 7000 family. New software features and up to 30 percent greater controller performance extend the power of the industry's fast-growing Open Storage effort. Sun's portfolio enhancements include improved application performance through enhanced iSCSI SAN support and a boost in performance for Oracle databases. In addition, customers can expect higher network performance with up to four times more bandwidth (40Gb/sec) and lower network latency through InfiniBand (IB). The addition of new CPUs delivers 30 percent additional performance up to 24 cores and improved system bandwidth, along with twice the DRAM cache - up to 512GB - the highest in the industry. With the addition Triple-Parity RAID, Sun is the first major storage vendor to offer robust data protection from as many as three drive failures, further reducing the risk of data loss when using larger capacity disk drives with longer rebuild times. Sun also became the first and only major NAS storage vendor to offer Triple Mirroring, which adds additional protection against disk failures and significantly improves backup and disaster recovery scenarios.
