IBM completes acquisition of National Interest Security Company
IBM announced that it has completed the acquisition of National Interest Security Company, LLC, a privately held company headquartered in Fairfax, VA. Financial terms were not disclosed. The business will be integrated into IBM Global Business Services, operating initially as a wholly-owned subsidiary. The combined offerings will enable IBM to expand its capabilities with federal, state and local government entities, particularly in the fast-growing areas of defense, healthcare, energy, logistics and security. NISC's deep federal expertise will complement IBM's existing public sector offerings and the recently launched Business Analytics and Optimization (BAO) Services for Public Sector. IBM's public sector BAO team works with government agencies utilizing advanced analytics to transform ordinary data into predictive intelligence, helping agencies improve the speed and quality of their decision making.

Intel
Intel preps new Xeons for March launch
Intel will launch its new Xeon processors mid-March and AMD will follow up with its new Opterons sometime near the end of the month. It is unclear at this time if Intel will launch both the six-core "Westmere-EP" processors for two-socket servers (presumably to be called the Xeon 5600) and its high-end, eight-core "Nehalem-EX" processors for four-socket and larger boxes (also known as "Beckton" and probably to be known as the Xeon 7600) on the same day. As IBM gave a preview of its eX5 chipset and related server designs, and even though Intel clearly meant for this chip to be used in four-socket and larger servers, at least two vendors (one is IBM and the other is Silicon Graphics) have bent the chip to suit their own needs, making two-socket designs out of the chip. IBM's eX5 chipset allows multiple two-socket blade or rack servers to be glued together into a single four-way SMP and broken back apart on the fly (a feature called FlexNode) as well as for a memory expansion chassis to be plugged into the SMP (known as Max5). SGI is taking the extra ports and bandwidth of the Nehalem-EX chips and using it to hook 128 blades into a shared memory, 2D torus configuration. It stands to reason that other server makers will also do clever things with the Nehalem-EX chips as well. The Westmere-EPs are a simpler matter: They simply plug into existing Nehalem-EP iron, which is only a year old, and offer about 50 per cent more oomph.

Intermec
Intermec, HealthWyse and Data Capture Solutions partner to improve point-of-care
Intermec Technologies announced its partnership with HealthWyse and Data Capture Solutions to provide healthcare professionals with access to electronic medical records anytime, anywhere. The durability of Intermec's CN3 ruggedized handheld computers combined with the ease-of-use of Healthwyse's mobile clinical software and Data Capture Solutions' support has saved customers, like Caritas Home Care, an average of 98 hours of total annual time per healthcare professional. HealthWyse, an Intermec independent software vendor (ISV), referred Caritas to Data Capture Solutions, an Intermec Premier value-added reseller (VAR) and specialist in integrating mobile solutions for healthcare that includes Total Care Services (helpdesk, software staging, cellular network activation and hot swap repair) to provide the healthcare institution the lowest possible cost of ownership. Because HealthWyse runs on PDAs and laptops, Caritas was able to run a lengthy field-test of various mobile devices before choosing the Intermec CN3. The rugged mobile handheld's Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WAN (3G CDMA/EV-DO or GSM/EDGE) radios provide mobile clinicians with immediate access to electronic medical records via the HealthWyse software.

Genesta announces availability of the SyVox Emulator
Genesta is proud to announce the availability of the SyVox Emulator, a product that voice enables an enterprise (WMS or ERP) application without requiring any changes to the enterprise application. One of the greatest challenges facing companies that want to implement a speech recognition solution in their distribution or manufacturing operation is adapting their current warehouse management system (WMS) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution to communicate with the voice enabling software. The SyVox Emulator speech enables legacy green screen applications running over terminal emulation (TE) connected to mid-range and mainframe platforms including IBM’s iSeries (AS400), AIX, and HPUX. It supports major emulation schemes including ANSI, 5250, and 3270. The SyVox Emulator is middleware that resides on a web server (Microsoft’s IIS), acting as a bridge between SyVox VoiceXML traffic from a mobile computer and a terminal emulation session on the remote host. Within the SyVox Emulator, the screen output is captured and translated into one or more voice enabled screens converting the application’s output into a conversation. The end user then interacts with the SyVox Client, Genesta’s fully multi-model, speech enabled client application running on Windows Mobile or Windows CE mobile computer.
