Mercury News interview: David Evans, chief technologist for Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group
By Brandon Bailey
When Dave Evans thinks of a car, he sees a mobile computing platform that adjusts to the personalities of different drivers while linking them to a global network. The "chief futurist" at Cisco Systems believes cars are just one of the smart and connected machines that people will use to navigate through a deluge of digital information and choices. Evans, whose job is anticipating trends for the giant networking company, recently showed off some prototypes at Cisco headquarters in San Jose. One was a mock-up of an automobile dashboard, with voice controls, music playlists and touch-screen displays that can be rearranged, enlarged or personalized to each driver's preference. A "check engine" light prompted the onboard computer to reach out to the Internet for a video explaining the problem. In the demo, the computer then e-mailed with a car dealer's service department, syncing with the driver's online calendar to schedule a visit for repairs.

Worldwide hardcopy peripherals market recorded double-digit year-over-year growth
The worldwide hardcopy peripherals market experienced double-digit growth in both units and shipment value in the second quarter of 2010 (2Q10). According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, the total market grew 20% year over year in 2Q10 to 29 million units while shipment value increased 14% year over year to $13.3 billion. This is the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year unit growth and the first double-digit growth for both units and shipment value since early 2000. Unlike previous quarters, where color laser multifunction printers (MFPs) exhibited the highest year-over-year growth, 2Q10 marked the first quarter where monochrome laser MFPs posted a higher year-over-year growth than color laser MFPs, 39.7% and 33.0%, respectively. While HP dominates the total laser market with 2.8 million units shipped in the second quarter, Samsung is the leader in both monochrome and color laser MFPs.

Echelon Corporation announced that the company's Board of Directors has appointed Ron Sege as President and Chief Executive Officer and to the company’s Board of Directors, completing a search process begun last November. Mr. Sege, 53, most recently served as President and Chief Operating Officer, and Board member, of 3Com Corporation from 2008 through its acquisition by HP. Mr. Sege said, "I am very excited to join Echelon at this important moment in history. Governments, businesses, and consumers around the world must become more energy efficient and this requires smarter energy grids, smarter buildings, and smarter environments. These ‘smarts’ require not just data networks, but open, standard distributed control networks -- exactly the networks that Echelon has been developing innovative solutions for over the last 20 years. I will focus on accelerating global market penetration for our solutions and driving operational excellence throughout the company. Our time is now and we have tremendous opportunity ahead of us."
