Samsung unveils first 16GB ‘very low profile’ module in IBM’s newest blade server
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it will demonstrate for the first time a 16-Gigabyte (GB), very low profile (VLP) memory module at VMworld 2010 in an IBM HS22V blade server, running on Intel Xeon 5600-series processors. Based on 4-gigabit (Gb), 40 nanometer (nm)-class DDR3, the new modules use 18 4Gb dual-die packaged (DDP) chips, and operate on 1.35 volts of electrical current. The 16GB 40nm-class DDR3 memory provides a powerful green solution, consuming 70 percent less power than four 4GB DDR3 modules and over 40 percent less than two 8GB modules, in setting a new “standard” for lower power consumption in servers. The module’s very low profile (18.75 mm high) allows it to be used in extremely compact blade servers. High-density, 40nm-class DDR3 will benefit data center mangers, IT directors and server farm managers who need to work with large data sets at significantly faster speeds than those offered by most servers on the market today.

Market

Worldwide hardcopy peripherals market recorded double-digit year-over-year growth
The worldwide hardcopy peripherals market experienced double-digit growth in both units and shipment value in the second quarter of 2010 (2Q10). According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, the total market grew 20% year over year in 2Q10 to 29 million units while shipment value increased 14% year over year to $13.3 billion. This is the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year unit growth and the first double-digit growth for both units and shipment value since early 2000. Unlike previous quarters, where color laser multifunction printers (MFPs) exhibited the highest year-over-year growth, 2Q10 marked the first quarter where monochrome laser MFPs posted a higher year-over-year growth than color laser MFPs, 39.7% and 33.0%, respectively. While HP dominates the total laser market with 2.8 million units shipped in the second quarter, Samsung is the leader in both monochrome and color laser MFPs.

HP expands ColorLok paper program
HP announced the expansion of the ColorLok paper standard with new benefits for commodity-grade office papers for laser printing and a broad recommendation that customers use ColorLok papers with HP LaserJet printers to ensure quality and reliability. ColorLok papers represent a standard for improved printing for both laser and inkjet printers. An independent, third-party study conducted by Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI) and commissioned by HP concludes that ColorLok quality standard papers can help maximize the life of laser printers compared to tested papers that do not meet the standard. ColorLok papers helped protect critical laser engine parts and kept them clean on the inside, enabling the consistent, reliable performance and quality customers expect. The large-particle mineral filler papers included in the BLI analysis that do not meet the ColorLok quality standard are manufactured in Asia and distributed primarily in China and India.
