HP

HP subsidiary NHIC Corp. awarded $72.3M contract by U.S. CMS
HP Enterprise Services announced that NHIC Corp., a subsidiary of HP, has been awarded a $72.3 million, five-year contract renewal by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to continue servicing Durable Medical Equipment (DME) suppliers in 11 northeastern U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Under the new contract, NHIC will support CMS’s core mission responsibility to provide timely and accurate Medicare program payments for home medical equipment, prosthetic and orthotic supplies. The original contract, awarded in 2006, supported CMS’s initial implementation of Medicare Contracting Reform provisions mandated by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. Services for this contract include claims processing, medical review, medical policy, appeals processing and customer service. Through its work with CMS, NHIC has introduced significant efficiencies and innovations in service delivery while addressing challenges such as payment accuracy and Medicare Contracting Reform implementation. NHIC will continue to provide these services through March 2016.

IBM

IBM raises bar, records highest ever TPC-C benchmark for x86 servers
IBM announced that it has achieved the highest TPC-C benchmark performance score ever achieved for an x86 server.  The single rack non-clustered IBM System x running DB2 achieved more than three million transactions per minute, which breaks the industry record set by the same IBM x86 system just eight months ago.  This achievement demonstrates the leadership performance possible with the combined power of IBM's exclusive 5th generation Enterprise X-Architecture,  DB2 9.7, IBM MAX5 on System x, and the lastest Intel Xeon E7 processors running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SP1).  IBM MAX5 on System x is an industry-first technology that decouples memory from the processor, enabling a 50 percent increase in memory capacity for a single server, which increases productivity and allows the system to process more transactions per minute. The IBM System x3850 X5 server performed a record 3,014,684 transactions per minute (tpmC) at $.59 USD/tpmC, ranking it 5th overall on TPC-C Top 10 results for all non-clustered systems.

Mobile DRAM market hits $2 billion threshold in Q1
In another sign of the growing prominence of mobile platforms like smartphones, handheld gaming devices and tablets, revenue in the first quarter for mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) exceeded the $2 billion level for the first time on a quarterly basis, according to a new Mobile & Embedded Memory Market Brief from information and analysis provider IHS. Global revenue for mobile DRAM hit an astonishing $2.07 billion during the first three months of this year, up 10 percent from an already hefty $1.88 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010. Showing how far the industry’s revenue levels have progressed, the increase between the two quarters of about $190 million was equivalent to almost the entire mobile DRAM market in the first quarter of 2009, when revenue amounted to just $205 million. Revenue in the first quarter this year is also up an impressive 150 percent from the same time last year.  Mobile DRAM is the DRAM variant currently preferred for use in mobile applications, including a variety of consumer electronics devices.

RFID

Motorola Solutions unveils next generation industrial-class fixed RFID reader
Motorola Solutions, Inc. introduced the FX9500 industrial-class fixed RFID reader for reading RFID-enabled pallets, cases and items at dock doors, conveyors and other industrial portal-based read points. The Motorola FX9500 is a rugged, high-performance fixed RFID reader built for demanding industrial RFID applications in manufacturing, distribution and warehouse, and retail receiving environments. The increased sensitivity of the FX9500 RFID reader yields greater accuracy for reading RF-challenging items, longer read ranges for applications such as yard management and higher throughput rates to read more tags as item-level RFID adoption increases and densely packed goods become more commonplace. The FX9500 is available in four-port / antenna configurations, as well as eight-port / antenna configurations that can cover more portals or dock doors with fewer readers, saving on deployment costs and achieving a lower cost per read point. The FX9500 allows for bistatic operation, where separate cables are used for antenna transmitting and receiving, for even higher RFID performance.

Wireless

Small business spending on wireless services to overtake wireline voice in 2012
It has always been predicted that small business expenditures on wireless services would someday exceed that of wireline voice.  That "someday" will be in 2012 as wireless becomes the largest category of telecommunications spending for small businesses, according to new research from In-Stat.  Wireline data spending and cloud computing services round out the four spending categories. Additional data includes:
--Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is set to grow 190% from 2010 to 2015.  Overall, cloud computing services are the largest growth engines for small business telecom spending.
--Traditional TDM services are set to decline 15% from 2010 to 2015, a loss of over $1 billion.
--Retail trade, along with the hospitality and food vertical will account for over $11.5 billion in spending in 2010.
--The 20-99 employee size portion of the small business segment accounts for over half of all spending in small businesses (5-99 employees).
