ADTRAN captures top spot in license-free microwave market
ADTRAN Inc., a leading supplier of license-free microwave radios, announced the company now holds the leading worldwide market share for these products according to a report recently released by Skylight Research. According to the report, ADTRAN now holds at least 28% of the worldwide market for unlicensed 5 GHz and under, up from only 17% one year ago. The company attributes the rapid growth to its successful penetration of the wireless carrier market. ADTRAN's TRACER products are deployed by all of the Tier 1 and many Tier 2 and Tier 3 wireless service providers in the U.S., as well as several global service providers. The TRACER 6000 Series is the industry's first modular wireless solution offering user-configurable TDM and Ethernet functionality in a single, 1U-chassis. The newly released, higher-transmit power versions of the TRACER 6420 and TRACER 6410 radios allow wireless carriers to maximize distance, while utilizing smaller, more cost-effective antennas.

IBM, 3Com tag-team on IP telephony suite

3Com and IBM announced a partnership to port 3Com's IP telephony server onto IBM's System i server platform, the re-branded, multiplatform version of the old AS/400 series. The System i IP Telephony Suite will enable IT to reduce the cost and complexity of mid-market offices by deploying a single server housing all of their core applications -- ERP and CRM, Websphere, DB-2 and now their IP telephony server, 3Com's VCX. Up to 2,000 users will be supported on a single System i5 520 or 550. While the IBM System i IP Telephony solution may be the first server to integrate an IP PBX, it's hardly the first integrated device. Cisco claims to have shipped 750,00 of its Integrated Service Routers (ISRs) that combine switching, routing, network security. So successful has Cisco been with the ISR, that Adtran has since released its own ISR-killer. The NetVanta 7100 IP PBX was introduced at the VoiceCon show and includes a router, Ethernet switch, firewall, VPN, CSU/DSU and an IP PBX. However, the IBM and 3Com deal will be unique in that they target the regional office, not the small branch. What's more, by running on i5/0S the VCX will inherit the availability and scalability features inherent in the platform. Since 3Com's VCX is pure SIP, IBM intends to use VCX as a platform for integrating convergence capabilities into other applications.

Nortel could buy, or be bought, after Alcatel deal

Nortel Networks Corp. could be the next to buy or be bought after the tie-up announced between Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, an analyst said. Alcatel said it would buy Lucent in a deal that creates a company to rival industry leader Cisco Systems Inc. "We believe the geographic exposure of the combined Alcatel/Lucent represents an attractive aspect that other vendors may wish to emulate with other deals," said Prudential Financial analyst Inder Singh. Merriman Curhan Ford analysts focused on Nortel as "the best value in the space and most likely to be the next player." They said Nortel could be a buyer, a seller, or remain as a standalone, although that was unlikely. "Given the changing environment we view major strategic activity at Nortel as a near certainty," they added. The Merriman analysts said Nortel would most likely benefit from a combination with Siemens, a deal that would make it the world's largest networking equipment supplier, and surpass the new Alcatel as the world leader in wireline, with market-leading positions in optical and VoIP. Merriman said Motorola would also be an attractive addition to Nortel's wireless unit, and would potentially add wireline access capability as well if Motorola could be coaxed to part with it.
