NATD Charities accepting donations – member in needOne of our members, STL of St. Louis needs help for one of
their employee’s infant daughter Danica Boni, who at six months old has a
genetic disorder called Hurler’s Syndrome. It is a very rare
degenerative illness, caused by a less than com-plete formulation of the
enzymes in her genetic code. Less that 4,000 cases of MPS I exist in the
world; if left untreated, MPS I patients have a life of pain/suffering that
spans 5-12 years. MPS patients typically suffer from scoliosis,
blindness, deafness, liver failure, cardiomyopathy - to name a few of the
degenerative disorders that often affect them during their short life span if
a cure is not found. News in Review

Avotus announces
Spanish-American War FET recovery services Avotus Corporation has rolled out Spanish-American War
Federal Excise Tax (FET) recovery services. Avotus’ service is in response to
the U.S. Treasury Department’s May 25 announcement that it “will no longer
pursue litigation and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will issue refunds
of tax on long-distance service for the past three years.” This “temporary”
luxury tax (since only rich people used phones) was instituted in 1898 to
finance the Spanish-American War. Now, 108 years later, one provision of the
tax is being terminated. The announcement applies to only the long-distance
portion of the tax and does not affect Federal taxes on “local telephone
service” and “teletypewriter exchange service.” However, in addition to the
traditional, wired telephony of the beginning of the 20th century,
it also applies to wireless services. Avotus Intelligent Communications
Management (ICM) with its Expense Management capabilities analyzes,
calculates and reports every aspect of enterprise communications bills and
can break out the FET. Just as important, it is able to document findings to
comply with Sarbanes-Oxley regulations to protect companies from errors and
omissions. Visit www.avotus.com.

Nortel
Nortel Networks reports wider 1Q loss
Nortel Networks
Corp. reported a wider first-quarter loss on higher expenses and slightly
lower sales, but the Canadian telecommunications equipment maker said it
still expects revenue growth this year. Nortel's chief executive Mike
Zafirovski described the first quarter as "challenging" but said
Nortel is still forecasting "good revenue and operating margin momentum"
beginning in the second quarter. For the quarter ended March 31, Nortel
reported a loss of $167 million, or 4 cents per share, versus a prior-year
loss of $104 million, or 2 cents per share. Revenue edged down to $2.38
billion from $2.39 billion a year earlier. Gross margin, a gauge of
profitability calculated by sales less cost of goods sold divided by sales,
was 38 percent of revenue, down 4 percentage points from the prior year.
Zafirovski described the quarter as a "tough" one in a conference
call and said gross margin was lower than expected due in part to a less
favorable product mix, as well as pricing pressures and the timing of certain
contracts. Sales of next-generation products, which have lower margins in
their early stages, hurt the quarter's results, as did revenue recognition of
several low-margin contracts which the company had been expecting later in
the year. The company projected 2006 revenue growth in the high single-digit
range, gross margin as a portion of revenue at roughly 40 percent, and
expenses flat to up slightly from 2005. Visit www.nortelnetworks.com. The Flag: EU &
