Avaya

Avaya, Lenovo to enable Vo-Fi for road warriors
Voice over IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (popularly referred to as Wi-Fi) has been making leisurely inroads into the communications world for the past several years. Two industry giants—VoIP infra vendor Avaya and premier notebook computer maker Lenovo—have plans to promote the use of mobile computers as VoIP phones. The joint solution will integrate Avaya's softphone technology into Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops, and make use of the latter's fingerprint-based authentication and Password Manager technologies to bolster call and address-book security. The move is reminiscent of Intel's fabled Centrino program that strove to build Wi-Fi connectivity into the heart of every Intel-based laptop. Extending that idea, owners of Lenovo's Avaya-equipped ThinkPads will now be able to make secure phone calls from any Wi-Fi-connected location.

Market

2006 enterprise telephony market up 9%
Traditional TDM PBX phone systems continue their steady decline in popularity, evidenced by a 22% drop in worldwide TDM PBX manufacturer revenue between 2005 and 2006, while IP PBX phone system sales continue to surge, growing 18% in the same period, says Infonetics Research in its latest "Enterprise Telephony" report. The strength of IP PBX equipment sales buoyed the overall enterprise telephony market to a 9% gain in 2006, reaching $8.9 billion worldwide. "The PBX market had another good year, with lines posting double-digit growth for the third year in a row," said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst at Infonetics Research. "On the market share front, the big story continues to be Cisco, the only company with significant market share gains in 2006, contributing almost half of the overall market growth for the year. Though Cisco is still fifth in the worldwide market, they moved from second to first place in the North American IP PBX market this year, not surprising given they came out on top as the preferred VoIP equipment supplier in our 'User Plans for VoIP' study."

Siemens

Siemens claims unmatched WiFi/cellular roaming
Roam where you want to, across a WiFi network and onto a cellular one. You won't be able to notice the difference and it's all with one number, one mailbox and with good quality voice calls, too. That's part of the pitch Siemens is making for HiPath MobileConnect, its latest product for fixed mobile convergence (FMC) users. The company said the product delivers unmatched fixed mobile convergence with enterprise dual-mode Wi-Fi cellular integration. Part of the Siemens open communications architecture, MobileConnect is geared for Enterprise Fixed Mobile Convenience -- that's right, not the word convergence but convenience -- by tossing fixed enterprise VoIP, Voice over Wireless LAN and cellular mobility on one appliance and device. SIP, the Session Initiation Protocol application layer control protocol for IP-based telephony, is the glue that makes it stick. Because the product line is based on open standards, it can connect with virtually any SIP-supported IP-PBX, WLAN and dual-mode handset. By first, Siemens is saying that it is the only major networking communications provider (compared to Avaya, Nortel, Cisco and Alcatel/Lucent) that combines a system that helps customers control calls across VoIP networks – including voice over wireless LAN or cellular. It works as one number, provides one mailbox and integrates with old-fashioned access to existing phone lines in a business (so rip and replace is not a necessity on legacy phone systems).

VoIP

Microsoft readies public beta test of VoIP server
Microsoft will release a public beta of new VoIP server software by the end of March. The software smoothly integrates with legacy phone networks and its Office application suite, the company said. On the company's Web site, users can register to download the beta versions of Office Communications Server 2007, as well as Office Communicator 2007, a client application for mobiles and desktops that enables instant messaging, voice and video. Office Communications Server will compete with hardware and software VoIP products from companies such as Cisco Systems and Avaya. Microsoft, however, is leveraging the wide use of its Office productivity suite and Exchange 2007 by integrating it with the new server, part of its "unified" communications strategy.
Companies won't have to rip out their existing private branch exchange (PBX) phone networks, according to Microsoft. Communications Server 2007 interoperates with PBX networks through SIP, the protocol used for VOIP calls, and works with different phones, devices and management tools, company representatives say.
