Striking gold with out-of-use equipment
Out with the old and in with the new – when your computers, phones and networking equipment get replaced with the latest and greatest technology, what typically happens to the leftovers? Often the equipment is shoved into some sort of storage closet never to be seen again. But you could be sitting on a potential gold mine and not even know it. “Many department managers do not realize how valuable their older equipment still is and how to properly dispose of it,” says Barry Shevlin, CEO of Network Liquidators. “The payout could be substantial if managers would take the equipment out of the closet and take advantage of recycling opportunities that yield cash for still usable equipment like with switches and routers.” Shevlin talks about visiting a national financial services company and opening a door to find nearly $100,000 worth of decommissioned networking gear. If managers start dusting off old equipment in the closet and learn how to properly dispose of or recycle it, Shevlin believes they will not only benefit the environment, but also gain the potential to “strike gold.”

Court denies Cisco Systems’ motion for summary judgment
An Orange County judge has denied Cisco Systems, Inc.’s motion for summary judgment on contract claims in a lawsuit filed against it by Infra-Comm Corporation, a San Juan Capistrano-based reseller of communications systems. In its lawsuit, former Cisco reseller Infra-Comm alleges that Cisco breached an exclusivity promise and instead improperly took an IP telephony deal valued at more than $5 million to another reseller AT&T. In the lawsuit filed January 2007, Infra-Comm said that Cisco breached contracts related to Cisco’s Opportunity Incentive Program (OIP) deal registration, including its Indirect Channel Partner Agreement (ICPA). At stake is the manner in which Cisco conducts business with resellers. After Infra-Comm filed the lawsuit against Cisco, Cisco terminated Infra-Comm’s status as an authorized reseller and Silver Partner, and with it Infra-Comm’s ability to resell Cisco products and related services to 40 active Infra-Comm clients. As a result, Infra-Comm lost 90 percent of its revenue, closed its two offices and had to lay off most of its employees.

Forecast: U.S. business SaaS revenue to double by 2012
Demand for software as a service (SaaS) business applications in the U.S. business market is growing at a steady pace across all sizes of business and vertical markets, reports In-Stat. Steadily increasing U.S. hosted application revenues - from $8 billion in 2008 to $16 billion by 2012 - are expected, the high-tech market research firm says. Recent research by In-Stat found the following: the healthcare market is among the most satisfied current hosted application user segments; the education market should be an important target market for providers, as it is a market full of thought-influencers; and despite strong current adoption, hosted Web collaboration application providers need to do more to reach new customers. This research is part of In-Stat's Vertical Market Analytics service, which provides clients analysis of demand for wireless, wireline, voice and data, and managed services by vertical market. This service is designed to provide clients with insight into business issues, opportunities and challenges driving network and wireless investments.

Nortel
Former Nortel executives face criminal charges
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police laid criminal charges against former Nortel Networks Corp. Chief Executive Frank Dunn and other onetime executives, accusing the men of fraudulently misstating the telecom equipment maker's results. Aside from Dunn, who faces seven counts, former Chief Financial Officer Douglas Beatty and Michael Gollogly, Nortel's former corporate controller, also face charges. The market enforcement team of the RCMP said the three were also accused of making false entries and omitting materials in Nortel's books. Police said the charges pertain to the period between the start of 2002 and June 30, 2003. In a statement issued shortly after the charges were announced, Nortel said it was not the target and that the charged executives were dismissed for cause in 2004. The accounting scandal that hit Toronto-based Nortel earlier this decade was one of the major hurdles it faced in its turnaround efforts after the tech bubble burst in 2001. It also forced the company to restate its results a number of times, shaking the investor faith in its prospects and triggering a bevy of investigations. The police said they received cooperation from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. and Ontario securities regulators and Nortel itself. The investigation has been a lengthy one: the RCMP became involved in the case as early as May 2004.
