3G Evolution: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband
Since the turn of the (21st) century, a good deal of the interest in the telecommunications domain has been focused on broadband wireless access technologies, and much of that on mobile wireless, including both 3G cellular and WiMAX. 3G Evolution addresses 3G evolution, in general, but concentrates its attention on the evolution of 3G mobile communication as developed in the 3GPP, which is chartered to produce specifications for 3G networks evolved from GSM core networks.
3G Evolution is a fairly scholarly piece of work that often gets very technical, so it is best suited for an engineer or other technically-oriented reader with a deep and abiding interest in the evolution and current status of HSPA and LTE specifications…and with reasonable math skills. Yet the book offers plenty of solid information for a quasi-technical reader with both a need to understand 3G technologies and the courage and stamina to work through some fairly challenging discussion.

Dialogic Brooktrout SR140 Fax Software receives Global Crossing certification
Dialogic Corporation announced that Global Crossing has certified the Dialogic Brooktrout SR140 Fax Software as successfully interoperating with Global Crossing’s SIP Trunking service. SR140 Fax Software provides Fax over IP (FoIP) capabilities for integrating fax servers and fax document management solutions with VoIP networks. The SR140 can be deployed in SIP, H.323 and MGCP environments and provides native SIP and H.323 support. It has been successfully tested for interoperability with IP-PBX and VoIP gateways from leading vendors, and is suitable for a variety of network-based fax applications that enable integration with document management and business process automation systems to support compliance with regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and Basel II. Dialogic products give the enterprise customer the flexibility to deploy FoIP in the IP environment of their choice, based on their individual needs.

ADTRAN names Gary Bolton as vice president of Global Marketing
ADTRAN, Inc. announced that it has named Gary Bolton as vice president of Global Marketing. Prior to joining Hatteras, Bolton served as vice president of Broadband Access Marketing for Ciena Corporation and had previously served as vice president of Product Marketing and Product Management for Catena Networks, which was acquired by Ciena in May 2004. Bolton’s career also includes 15 years of service with Nortel Networks in various management roles including Marketing, Product Line Management and Engineering. He holds an MBA from Duke University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University.

Mitel announces patent cross license agreement with IBM
Mitel announced a patent cross license agreement with IBM; the cross license provides mutual access to a broad range of patents that will enable the companies to pursue strategic opportunities created by the transition to unified communications. “This agreement with IBM will enable our companies and our customers to benefit from the innovation and creativity that is embodied in our respective patents and inventions,” said Christian Szpilfogel, head of Mitel's Intellectual Property Licensing. “We believe in taking a collaborative yet proactive approach to protecting our intellectual property.” Mitel and IBM maintain active patent and technology licensing programs that offer licensing arrangements to companies interested in their respective portfolios.

Radware snaps up Nortel division
Radware has reached an asset purchase agreement to acquire Nortel's Layer 4-7 application delivery business after months of speculation around the fate of the embattled networking firm. Nortel filed for bankruptcy protection in January and later announced that it was going to reduce its global workforce. The Radware deal will see the transfer of products, inventory and intellectual property from Nortel's Layer 4-7 business, as well as certain tangible assets and service contracts. Nortel itself acquired its application switch product line when it bought out Alteon WebSystems in late 2000. Once the acquisition is complete, Radware intends to offer the application delivery products under a merged brand called Radware Alteon. It has also pledged to Nortel's existing Alteon customers that it will be adding significant investment into service and support as well as continuing to develop and sell the range using the experience and technology from both sides. Radware has also said it will be taking on some of Nortel's employees working on the Alteon range, which may help alleviate the headcount of Nortel's impending cuts.
