Veramark Technologies, Inc. announced the hiring of three seasoned professionals to help the company meet the growing demand for its telecom expense management (TEM) products and services. Gary Miko and Keith Hadelman joined Veramark as Regional Sales Managers, and Matt Lennarz will assume responsibility for the company’s telecom expense management software as Director of Product Management. “As the economy continues to struggle, more companies are turning to expense management solutions as a means to improve the bottom line,” said Veramark President and CEO Tony Mazzullo. “We are committed to building and maintaining a team of knowledgeable, experienced professionals to serve our customers and meet the growing demand for our telecom expense management solutions.”

ScanSource named to Fortune Magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies list

ScanSource, Inc. has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies.  This year, Fortune combined its former America’s Most Admired Company survey with its World’s Most Admired Company survey, covering 64 industries: 25 international industries and 39 primarily US-market industries. ScanSource is one of only two South Carolina companies named to the list. The survey starts with approximately 1,400 companies from the Fortune 1000, non-U.S. companies in Fortune's Global 500 database with revenues of $10 billion or more, and the top foreign companies operating in the U.S.  The companies are then sorted by industry and the 15 largest for each international industry are selected, as are the ten largest for each U.S. industry. To create the 64 industry lists, Hay Group, Fortune’s survey partner, asked executives, directors and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. This year only the best are listed: a company's score must rank in the top half of its industry survey.

3G EvolutionWebster's New World Telecom Dictionary
Need Words? Get Webster's!

Telecommunications has a language all its own, rife with technical terminology, much of which is in the form of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, initialisms and portmanteaux. Some terms have multiple very precise, and occasionally imprecise, meanings, depending on the context—broadband, channel, circuit, link and trunk are but a few examples. So you shouldn't be surprised that you sometimes grope for the right word. The wrong word can result in confusion or misunderstanding and the consequences can be considerable. Expectations can get out of sync. Relationships can suffer. Contract disputes can develop. Allegations of infringement of intellectual property rights can ensue. The law can get involved, and we all know what that means.

The truth certainly does not lie in Wikipedia, which is an open source online encyclopedia. Like a cell phone, it's convenient, but unreliable. Like a chat room, anyone can contribute, but no one is responsible, much less accountable, for ensuring the truth or objectivity of the opinions expressed. Most telecom dictionaries and encyclopedias are so poorly researched and edited and so full of nonsense as to render them completely unreliable, as well. Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary is the only truly authoritative contemporary telecom reference. Written by Ray Horak, an internationally acclaimed telecom consultant, educator and author, Webster's is carefully researched and well written in Horak's plain-English, commonsense style. Available from booksellers everywhere.

snom VoIP phones receive top green rating in recent technology test
snom technology AG announced that the company's VoIP phone portfolio achieved the highest "green" standard in a recent test against VoIP handset competitors.  snom's SIP based phones received top marks for being the most energy efficient in head-to-head testing against six other VoIP competitors in a recent lab study conducted by the Research Group for Telecommunication Networks at the Frankfurt Main University of Applied Sciences (FH Frankfurt) in Germany. Research assistants and engineers at FH Frankfurt tested a total of 23 VoIP phones by seven well-known manufacturers over a three-month period. In every use scenario investigated - idle mode, conversation, idle mode after a conversation, and three-way conference - snom phones had the lowest power consumption in each comparable product class. The readings taken by the FH Frankfurt research group show that VoIP phones with large illuminated displays generally consume the most power.

Juniper Networks announces Stratus Project
Juniper unveiled its latest market strategies for data centers, enterprises and service providers. The main announcement was Juniper’s entry into data centers with its Stratus Project. Much of what Juniper announced was a spin on other vendors' stories, but is low risk in what is expected to be a challenging year for all. Citing a proliferation of misguided data-center connectivity solutions, Juniper believes IP will be the solution to explosive high-performance data-center growth. While it is true we’ve seen HSSI, FDDI, InfiniBand and Fiber Channel fade, Juniper is not the first to propose IP as the ultimate data-center connectivity solution. Juniper disclosed that it will launch two new models of the EX line into the data center, with help from new partners IBM, Intel and Dell. However, this comes almost a year after Cisco launched the Nexus data-center switches and the Nuova acquisition, which may launch Cisco into the data-center server business.
