Gores/Siemens venture eyes bid for Nortel unit
A joint venture of private equity firm Gores Group and Germany's Siemens AG said it is pushing to submit a bid to acquire the enterprise solutions business of bankrupt Canadian telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks. The venture, called Enterprise Networks Holdings (ENH), said it is expending considerable resources, time and expense in the expectation of making a competing bid for the assets. Avaya Inc, with an offer of $475 million, is currently the stalking horse bidder for the Nortel business. ENH has filed a limited objection to the proposed bidding procedures for the Nortel unit in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. It said the procedures have several provisions that not only give Avaya an unfair advantage, but also reduce the likelihood that Nortel's stakeholders will receive maximum value for the assets. ENH has asked the court to require that Nortel provide each qualified bidder all information about the assets being sold. It has also asked Nortel to provide to qualified bidders all documents related to Avaya's bid for the assets, along with any documents relating to competing proposals for the assets. Deloitte, which is acting as an adviser to Nortel through the bankruptcy process, has indicated that bidding procedures relating to the sale of the enterprise solutions business are likely to be finalized in court, on or around Aug. 4. U.S. and Canadian courts approved the $1.13 billion sale of Nortel Networks' wireless assets to Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson.

TIGO Bolivia enhances VoIP interconnects with Acme Packet
Acme Packet announced that TIGO Bolivia, a unit of multi-national mobile operator Millicom International Cellular S.A., is deploying Acme Packet Net-Net session border controllers (SBCs) to support its VoIP interconnects for international long distance. Acme Packet SBCs provide the security and advanced call routing required to scale and optimize its VoIP peering relationships. The Acme Packet solution allows TIGO to offer enhanced quality of service (QoS) for its international long distance calls by eliminating congestion at its interconnect borders.
Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs are deployed in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, for VoIP interconnects to other service providers for international long distance termination. Previously, TIGO was experiencing surges in traffic due to network congestion from interconnect partners which reduced the completion of subscribers’ international calls. TIGO’s media gateways could not deliver the security and control requirements for its VoIP interconnect borders. The call admission control capabilities of Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs police inbound and outbound traffic based on the number of concurrent sessions that can be supported and bandwidth available, assuring call quality. Acme Packet’s flexible routing capabilities, including least-cost routing and routing based on quality measurements, optimize TIGO’s services while reducing costs. The Net-Net SBCs support QoS monitoring and call detail record generation on a per-call and per-interconnect partner basis, providing TIGO with information for traffic planning as well as settlement.

The agreement establishes Avaya as the “stalking horse” for an auction process over the next 60 days. As an organization committed to representing the Nortel customer, we see this as a positive step.
While much can change in what is likely to be an active bid process, this news sends an important signal - Nortel solutions will continue. The rumors of Nortel liquidation simply are not true.
