Acme Packet is SBC market leader for fourth year in a row
Acme Packet announced that leading research firms Infonetics Research, Dell’Oro Group and Current Analysis reported that Acme Packet continued to lead the session border controller (SBC) market in 2009. With a consensus market share greater than 50%, Acme Packet remains the undisputed leader in the SBC market it invented. In its March 2010 report, Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers – Quarterly Worldwide and Regional Market Share and Forecasts 4Q2009, Infonetics reported that Acme Packet captured 52% of the SBC market based on product revenues for fiscal year 2009, almost four times that of any competitor. In addition, Dell’Oro Group reported in its Carrier IP Telephony report for 2009 that Acme Packet held a commanding 55% of the SBC market in the same time period. Current Analysis’ March 2010 Company Assessment gave Acme Packet a five-star rating for the 5th year in a row, naming the company as “the runaway SBC market leader” while noting that, “with new products to address scalability and opportunities in enterprise and mobile environments, Acme Packet looks to continue its dominance in the SBC market in the coming year.”

Mitel joins BlackBerry Alliance Program
Mitel announced that it has joined the BlackBerry Alliance Program as an Elite Member and announced plans to add BlackBerry Mobile Voice System 5 (BlackBerry MVS 5) to its feature-rich unified communications solutions. Mitel IPO nets $147M, falls short of projections
Mitel Networks Corp. made $147.4 million from its recent initial public offering.  Mitel priced its IPO lower than analysts and investors had expected, at $14 rather than $18-$20. The $147.4 million, then, falls short of the hoped-for $180 million. Mitel plans to use the IPO proceeds to pay down debt. The company’s regulatory filings show loans and credit facilities totaling about $440 million at the beginning of this year. Mitel, headquartered in Canada, first tried to go public in 2006 but ended those efforts as the global economy soured. This time, Mitel hit Wall Street with the help of BofA Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan and UBS Investment Bank, as well as Piper Jaffray, Genuity Capital Markets and JMP Securities. Mitel was founded in 1973 by Terence Matthews. He lost control of his company years later but bought back that ownership in 2001. Since then Mitel has cut jobs, had a patent dispute with ShoreTel, bought rival Inter-Tel in 2007, and cranked out new products including mobile voice and data service. The company lost $193 million during its fiscal year 2009 but returned to profitability in the three months ended January with $33.2 million in income.

Cell phone industry declares end of recession
The cell phone industry is proclaiming the end of the recession for the segment following an outstanding final quarter of 2009 and a projected substantial growth for smart phones in 2010, according to iSuppli Corp. A resilient performer in an otherwise moribund world economy during the past year, cell phones ended 2009 with shipments of 1.15 billion units. While that number is down from the overall 2008 figure of 1.2 billion handsets, shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009 represented the culmination of an increasing growth pattern throughout all of last year. Compared to third-quarter shipments of 290 million, about 335 million mobile handsets shipped in the fourth quarter, up 15.5 percent. Among the various handset categories, smart phones—defined as handsets with a high-level operating system—are projected to expand 35.5 percent in 2010. Smart phone growth will be driven by a number of promising developments, including the introduction of entry-level smart phones, enthusiasm from vendors across the mobile phone and PC industries, the prevalence of 3G network deployments and the promotion of data-centric services in mature markets.
