Microsoft Lync: Microsoft launches next generation UC software
Microsoft Corp. announced the release candidate of Microsoft Lync, the next generation of Microsoft’s unified communications software that enables people to connect in new ways, anytime, anywhere. Lync is the new family brand for the products formerly known as Communications Server, Communications Online and Communicator, and it also now includes Lync Web App and Lync Online. The release candidates of Lync 2010 and Lync Server 2010 are now available for businesses of all sizes to try for free. They can be downloaded at http://technet.microsoft.com/evalcenter/ff808407.aspx. This broad release candidate is the last step toward release to manufacturing and general availability scheduled for later this year. Microsoft Lync can make every engagement a virtual face-to-face meeting, because any interaction can include video and audio conferencing, application and desktop sharing, instant messaging, and telephony.

Avaya releases Flare Experience
Avaya has unveiled a new family of enterprise grade unified communications and collaboration products. Headlining the announcement is the Avaya Flare Experience. Flare runs on Google’s Android operating system. At the heart of the Flare Experience is a 11.6 inch android based device that includes an HD camera, HD audio, supports SIP based communications, has Wi-Fi connectivity, a USB for cellular 3G services, can support a mouse and keyboard via a USB port, HDMI connector for large displays, and will integrate for telephony. The device can be used as a phone, in addition to video options, and integrates with the telecommunications infrastructure. The rollout is the latest delivery against the multi-phase product roadmap that Avaya first introduced in January. Since then, Avaya’s Innovation Series has delivered advancements in unified communications and collaboration across its Small and Mid-Size Enterprise, Data Solutions and Contact Center portfolios as well as the Avaya Agile Communication Environment and Avaya Aura 6.0 communications platform.

Clarus Systems to host CIPTUG webinar on IP telephony and UC

TDAzlan on prowl for Avaya partners
TDAzlan has launched an Avaya reseller recruitment push shortly after bagging full access to the communication vendor’s portfolio. The distributor, which worked with Nortel before the ailing vendor was bought by Avaya, said it will look to hook in new partners by running a series of opportunity events across the country. It will also launch a telemarketing campaign and will seek to generate leads for partners at the IP-EXPO event. Graham Bunting, TDAzlan Avaya team leader, claimed Avaya is equipped to tackle both the SME market through its IP Office range and larger enterprises through its Aura offering. “Our timing couldn’t be better - unified communications is arriving right now and we have a breadth and depth of skills and values to offer traditional voice dealers and emerging convergence resellers, looking to offer something fresh to their customers,” he said.

Aculab announces new software release
Aculab announced the general availability of V2.20 software for its ApplianX IP Gateway – a resilient, single-purpose, plug-and-play device designed for both enterprise and service provider environments. As part of this enhancement, the ApplianX IP Gateway includes a number of new features, such as support for full T.38 fax interoperability, enabling a total fax solution within an IP environment. The ApplianX IP Gateway can be configured for a maximum number of simultaneous fax calls to maintain call quality and prevent faxes from blocking both incoming and outgoing voice calls.  In addition to T.38 fax support, V2.20 software also includes a number of other features, including T1 hookflash transfer and improved diversion information availability. Duo County Telephone simplifies VoIP migration with Citel’s Portico TVA
Duo County Telephone is a membership based cooperative that has served South Central Kentucky for more than 50 years. It offers more than 13,000 customers a range of services including voice, broadband, LAN/WAN services, computer repair, cable television and IPTV to extended rural areas, and Fiber Optics to the Home (FTTH). As part of its search for enhanced service offerings, Duo County decided to move to a MetaSwitch softswitch to allow more flexibility and features in its voice offerings. However when it first started out replacing the Centrex phones with IP phones, it found the process to be both cumbersome and labor-intensive. To overcome the problems it had identified, it turned to the Portico TVA from Citel. By installing the Portico TVA, Duo County could migrate its customers to VoIP with minimal disruption because it could re-use existing phone lines and power, so no rewiring was needed. For most of its clients, Duo County simply had to install a TVA where the existing demarc block was located. Duo County then accessed the TVA remotely to make any local changes or additions from its own offices.

Mitel has won the Nemertes Research PilotHouse Unified Communications Vendor award in the Market Challenger category. The goal of the awards is to gauge how companies perform for business end users and the rankings are based on input from these organizations.
