Aastra SIP-DECT phones first to be certified with NET SmartSIP
Among Aastra Technologies Limited’s more recent innovations is the integration of SmartSIP 2.0 for Microsoft Lync Server 2010 from Network Equipment Technologies (NET) with Aastra’s award winning SIP-DECT mobility solution and broad portfolio of standards based SIP phones. The Aastra SIP-DECT phones are the first to be fully certified with NET SmartSIP. NET’s SmartSIP 2.0 is a software app that provides Lync voice interoperability for SIP devices. Book review

Thesaurus of Claim Construction

I recently found an exceptional piece of work in the Thesaurus of Claim Construction by Robert C. Kahrl and Stuart B. Soffer. This book is not for everyone, but if you are considering patenting an invention, you need this book. If you are or anticipate the possibility of being involved in patent litigation, you need this book. Actually, I suggest that this book is useful in any sort of technical litigation. If a patent judge has ruled on the definition of a term, that definition can well spill over into contract disputes, as an example.

Mark Twain said it well. “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” I would add that the use of the wrong word can have the same effect as being struck by lightning—it can be very unpleasant. Thesaurus of Claim Construction is an exceptional work written by two very knowledgeable, highly skilled and well seasoned gentlemen. I recommend it without reservation.

RAD unveils unique SFP
RAD Data Communications has expanded its unique System-on-an-SFP family with the addition of the new SFP-ER, a miniature Ethernet extender that delivers 100 Mbps of Ethernet up to 550m (1,804 ft) over existing copper wires (4-pair). Housed in a Small Factor Pluggable (SFP) enclosure, the finger-sized SFP-ER is easily attached to any Ethernet switch with an MSA-compatible 100 Mbps TX Serdes. "The SFP-ER will prove to be a welcome tool for system integrators, service providers and campus network managers because it lets them use the existing copper infrastructure for high-speed Ethernet while eliminating the expense of laying new fiber," states Jacky Acoca, Global Business Manager for Smart SFPs at RAD Data Communications. "In addition, it has an advantage over VDSL because it is symmetric and also minimizes the need to purchase external VDSL boxes, saving space, reducing power consumption and cabling requirements, and greatly simplifying management and deployment."

VMware and Mitel collaborate, achieve multiple technology breakthrough
VMware and Mitel unveiled a significant technical advancement designed to considerably increase the rapidly growing deployment of desktop virtualization for IT departments around the world. Specifically, Mitel will integrate its virtualized Unified Communicator (UC) Advanced client software with VMware View 5, thereby enabling Mitel and VMware to deliver soft phone and mobile device integration into a desktop virtualization environment. This unique collaboration will dramatically extend the power of desktop virtualization, thereby enabling a user’s voice solution and UC applications to be deployed together as a single unified solution in a virtual desktop environment. As a result, IT departments can significantly reduce costs while extending their desktop and mobile environment to anywhere a user has an Internet connection. In addition to accessing the desktop with VMware View, users will also be able to access their collaboration tools including voice, video, presence, secure instant messaging, audio and web conferencing, document sharing, voice messaging and email from their VMware View client.

White paper outlines power considerations in business disaster planning
